2025’s One Chicago Crossover Overused A Trope That Cheapened Its Story

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for the 2025 One Chicago crossover, “In the Trenches.”

The 2025 One Chicago crossover, entitled “In the Trenches,” cheapens the drama in a high-stakes episode by overusing a trope. Like many of the best One Chicago crossovers, “In the Trenches” begins with a Firehouse 51 call that leads to a crisis — a gas explosion that causes a mass casualty event and which appears to have been engineered on purpose. The rescue workers need the help of doctors and police officers to resolve the situation.

The gas explosion leads to several intense situations, including a potentially heartbreaking one for Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Platt (Amy Morton). The action also revolves around Chicago PD’s Ruzek (John Patrick Flueger) and Chicago Fire’s Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) attempting to save a group of people trapped on a train after the subway station collapses. These exciting stories use several tropes that have become common to shows in the One Chicago universe to help build suspense.

The 2025 One Chicago Crossover Puts Three Couples In Peril

Platt, Ruzek, and Kidd All Face Life-Threatening Situations While Their Significant Others Are Powerless To Help

The 2025 One Chicago crossover puts three characters in danger while their significant others are rendered helpless. Platt is the most concerning of the three. While she holds a suspect at gunpoint near the site of the gas explosion, another masked perp sneaks up behind her and shoots her in the back, leaving her to bleed out on the ground. Thus, when Platt is brought to Chicago Med’s Gaffney Medical Center, she’s in critical condition. Throughout the rest of the crossover, Mouch cannot do anything for her besides wait for news from the doctors.

Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan teases developments for couple Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess in the upcoming One Chicago crossover event.

Meanwhile, Ruzek and Kidd get trapped together on a train that is inaccessible to the outside world because of a station collapse. Ruzek insists he will be fine, refusing to allow Burgess (Marina Squerciati) to take Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) out of school to say a final goodbye. He also passes a message from Kidd to Severide (Taylor Kinney) telling him that he was right about the importance of making time for each other. However, oxygen is in short supply on the train. Thus, One Chicago‘s Burgess and Severide are left to worry their partners won’t make it out alive.

The 2025 One Chicago Crossover Should Have Only Focused On Trudy & Mouch’s Tragedy

Having Three Potential Deaths Was Too Much, Especially When They Weren’t Likely

Chicago Fire season 13’s ratings have been falling, so having a high-stakes episode that threatens fan-favorite characters was a good idea. However, it was unnecessary to have three characters face similar dilemmas. Instead, “In the Trenches” would have been a more powerful episode if the One Chicago crossover focused on the danger Platt and Mouch were facing without implying that Ruzek or Kidd might also die. It was especially silly to put Ruzek in this situation when his wedding to Burgess has already been confirmed, which means that there was no possibility he would die.

The One Chicago crossover would have worked equally well if Severide and Burgess begged their partners to be careful without overdoing the drama.

It was logical for Severide and Burgess to worry about losing their partners, but it was unnecessary to suggest that Ruzek or Kidd might actually pass away. The One Chicago crossover would have worked equally well if Severide and Burgess begged their partners to be careful without overdoing the drama. This would have made room for an emotional scene in which the two agreed they would make their partners a higher priority when they came home. Unfortunately, “In The Trenches” instead overused the partner-in-danger trope, which was a distraction from the emotional Platt/Mouch storyline.
