Bill Skarsgård’s $180M Horror Remake Becomes Major Streaming Success Despite Shutout At The Oscars

A horror remake starring Bill Skarsgård has just become a success on streaming after walking away empty-handed at the Oscars. After appearing in movies like Allegiant (2016) and Atomic Blonde (2017), Skarsgård rocketed to fame with the release of It in 2017, a Stephen King adaptation that featured the actor taking on the role of Pennywise the Clown to terrifying effect. The film was a massive horror hit, and Skarsgård reprised his role in 2019’s It Chapter Two.

Skarsgård isn’t ready to say goodbye to Pennywise just yet, however, and he’s set to play the monster once more in HBO’s Welcome to Derry prequel show. The actor’s exploration of the horror genre extends beyond King adaptations, though, and he recently appeared in Barbarian (2022), a surprise hit from director Zach Cregger. After detours to the world of action with movies like John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) and The Crow (2024), Skarsgård returned to horror at the end of 2024, taking on one of his scariest roles yet.

The latest streaming success is just another in a long line of victories for Nosferatu. Reviews were generally very positive, as indicated by the movie’s 84% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics praising the impressive production design and atmosphere, as well as the strong performances from Skarsgård, Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. In her Nosferatu review for ScreenRant, Patrice Witherspoon singles out Eggers’ direction and tonal sensibilities, as well as the movie’s visuals:

Eggers, with his keen eye for atmospheric tone and gothic filmmaking, has achieved success in creating his latest horror feature. It may not incite fear in a classical sense, but it haunts us at every minute of its runtime. Gorgeous cinematography and an exceptional score elevate this tale of obsessive torment.

This critical success accompanies a strong showing at the box office. Nosferatu was made on an estimated budget of $50 million and grossed a strong $180 million at the box office, setting a new record for Eggers. The response to the movie was enough to lead to an easy green light for his next movie, Werwulf, a werewolf movie set in the 13th century. With Werwulf still well over a year away from its December 2026 release date, it’s clear that audiences are enjoying revisiting Nosferatu on streaming.
