Hugh Jackman Hits The Gym Prompting Fan Speculation That He May Be Returning As Wolverine To The MCU

On the heels of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel fans have been speculating about when the titular duo may show up again. Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman recently fanned the flames by posting a video of himself weightlifting to Instagram, prompting Marvel enthusiasts to question if he is returning to his iconic role. Though he initially set out to retire with 2017’s Logan, the actor reprised his part in Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, which became a massive box office success.

His return was left open-ended, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe film saw Logan and Wade together with the former’s loved ones. Moreover, the casting announcement for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that other classic X-Men stars, James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen are joining the franchise. Combining that news with the reveal that not all actors in the film have been announced, Jackman is widely speculated to make an appearance. His video at the gym could further support this idea.

What Hugh Jackman’s Post About Hitting The Gym Means

As to whether fans can expect to see Jackman in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor is keeping his cards close to his chest. When directly asked, the actor stated:

I really can’t say much, except when you say ‘appear’, [it’s] more like dominate and destroy every other character—I’m kidding. I really have nothing to add, and if I did, I would find a really cool way to not say it, but I actually have nothing to add.

Alternatively, his Deadpool & Wolverine costar was more optimistic. Reynolds has teased a follow-up with both Logan and Wade. Not only did he say that he was working on pitches for a sequel, but he added that “would always want Deadpool and Wolverine to be paired in some way.” As such, it can be implied that he has some insight into Jackman’s potential to return, and it may be a likelihood.

Jackman could be getting into shape for a variety of reasons; however, his MCU return does seem likely. Given how many original X-Men cast members are returning, it would be a missed opportunity to reunite them. Even though neither Jackman nor Reynolds are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they show up in that film or its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Either way, it’s hard to imagine Deadpool & Wolverine would be the last time Jackman plays Wolverine.
