Love, Death, & Robots’ Perfect Replacement Is Already One Of My Most Anticipated Prime Video Shows

Summary

  • Prime Video is creating an anthology series to rival
    Love, Death, & Robots
, focusing on video game worlds.
  • Love, Death, & Robots’
exploration of sci-fi themes and storytelling adds to the genre in fascinating ways.
  • Tim Miller’s industry experience and storytelling abilities could bring new layers to
    Secret Level
, adding to the anthology genre.

Prime Video’s upcoming answer to Netflix’s Love, Death, & Robots is already one of my most anticipated shows. As an avid sci-fi fan, Love, Death & Robots’ unique premise and multiple art styles captured me immediately. The rich, compacted storytelling left little room for gaps as it somehow thoroughly explored multiple worlds and ideas with ease, especially during season 3 of Love, Death, & Robots. Therefore, Prime Video’s attempt to copy the series’ strong anthology format through its upcoming animated series is now immediately at the top of my must-watch list.

The episodes of Love, Death & Robots are broken down into standalone stories that take place in multiple worlds. Using differing art and directorial styles, the series explores major themes and subgenres within sci-fi in tight 20-minute episodes. Until recently, the series had little competition due to this formatting and focus. However, Tim Miller’s upcoming Prime Video anthology could be the streaming service’s answer to Love, Death, & Robots, widening the anthology genre while adding a new twist with a focus on video games.

The girl running through a wet street filled with signs and lights in the Love, Death, & Robots episode The Witness

Miller’s newest anthology, Secret Level, could be Prime Video’s addition to the anthology genre that Netflix revitalized with Love, Death, & Robots. As originally reported by Deadline, Secret Level will be focusing on short stories based in popular video game worlds, with Miller set to be executive producer alongside the creative team at Blur Studios. Several beloved video game universes have been confirmed for Secret Level, including but not limited to God of War, Mega Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and Warhammer 4000.

At the time of writing, Volume 4 of
Love, Death, & Robots
does not have an official release date.

This new series could be Prime Video’s answer to Love, Death, & Robots as it not only repeats the format of the previous series but adds a new twist to it. Through this exploration of well-known IPs, Secret Level could expand on themes that these worlds already have baked in, strengthening and adding to their lore through new stories. To me, that exploration and expansion of tropes and themes is what made and, with its announced renewal, continues to make Love, Death, & Robots one of the most interesting sci-fi anthologies.

Love, Death, & Robots Has Been One Of The Most Fascinating TV Anthologies Since Season 1

Each Story Plays With Core Ideas In The Sci-Fi Genre

Love, Death, & Robots has been, since season 1, one of the most fascinating TV anthologies I have seen as its unique stories, characters, and ideas allow it to examine key parts of the sci-fi genre. One of my favorite episodes of the series is “Three Robots”. All of Love, Death, & Robots’ characters are great, but these three little robots traversing Earth’s apocalyptic remains made me laugh and care for them. What caught me, though, was the episodes’ exploration of this classic sci-fi idea of exploring what is left after humanity’s demise through the minimal care the robots showed.

I liked that the robots were fascinated by things we took for granted, as well as showcased how easily this silly story could be reality through the perspective of beings who have little stake in our continuance. Season 1 of the series really digs into this particular idea throughout, demonstrating how small we are and also how explosive our actions can be. This makes Miller’s newest project so exciting to me, as his experience in the video game scene combined with this kind of storytelling could lead to some intriguing narratives.

Miller’s Experience In The Industry Could Lead To New, Unique Stories In Secret Level

Love, Death & Robots (2019-Present)

Miller’s experience in the video game industry makes the premise of Secret Level even more exciting as his understanding could add further new layers to these established worlds. Miller has acted as a visual effects producer for many larger video game IPs, including Mass Effect 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Shadow The Hedgehog. He was also the writer and director of several episodes of Love, Death, & Robots, showcasing his ability to combine story with striking visuals and humor in episodes such as season 3’s “The Very Pulse of the Machine”.

Love, Death, & Robots
‘ worlds demonstrate how he explores these complex concepts, so adding in the context of these popular IPs would only strengthen his direction and the overall arc of each short.

Marrying his knowledge of these popular worlds with his storytelling prowess, Miller could easily add to these narrative themes while also creating new ones for fans to consider. Love, Death, & Robots’ worlds demonstrate how he explores these complex concepts, so adding in the context of these popular IPs would only strengthen his direction and the overall arc of each short. As a result, Secret Level could continue the legacy of Love, Death, & Robots as it takes us behind the scenes of our favorite gaming worlds to see what these characters do when no one is at the controls.
