Early Life And Education
Muthuraj was born on April 24, 1929, in Gajanur, India. He was raised by his parents, Singanalluru Puttaswamayya and Lakshmamma. Muthuraj had two siblings, S.P. Varadaraj and Sharadamma.
Muthuraj’s formal education ended after the 3rd standard, as he dropped out of school at a young age. His ethnicity is Hindi and his religion is Hinduism.
Career
Rajkumar began acting as a child artist in the 1942 film “Bhakta Prahlada” and the 1952 film “Sri Srinivasa Kalyana.” However, his breakthrough role came in 1953 when film director H.L.N. Simha spotted him for the lead role in the movie “Bedara Kannappa.” Simha renamed him Rajkumar for the film.
Prior to “Bedara Kannappa,” Rajkumar had only appeared in minor roles. But the success of his debut film catapulted him to stardom in the Kannada film industry. He went on to have a prolific career, acting exclusively in Kannada films except for one Telugu remake of “Bedara Kannappa, “Kalahasti Mahatyam.
Over his five-decade career, Rajkumar had lead roles in 205 films. He owned a production company called Sri Vajreshwari Combines and produced several of his films. Some of his landmark films include “Bhagyada Bagilu” (his 100th film), “Devatha Manushya” (his 200th film), and “Shabdavedhi” (his final film).
Rajkumar was known for his versatility, taking on a wide range of roles—from mythological and historical characters to romantic, rural, and action-oriented parts. Along with contemporaries Udaya Kumar and Kalyan Kumar, he was part of the “Kumara Thrayaru” trio, appearing in 36 films with Udaya Kumar and 5 with Kalyan Kumar.
