WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for POWER GIRL #12!Power Girl is rumored to be getting a powerful upgrade with a massive weapon, which instantly distinguishes her from the rest of DC’s Kryptonian family. The Super-Family seldom relies on physical weapons since they are practically living weapons themselves. Whether this formidable new accessory will become a permanent addition to Paige Stelter’s design is still unknown, but it certainly sparks an exciting idea regarding DC’s upcoming Absolute Universe launch.
In the preview for Leah Williams, Travis Moore, and Sebastian Cheng’s Power Girl #12, Paige goes on a date with the mysterious Axel Gust in the mythical realm of Asgard. While it’s uncertain if the date will be a success, the cover hints at an intriguing addition to Power Girl’s arsenal: a massive long ax.
This new weapon takes center stage on Yanick Paquette and Arif Prianto’s main cover, sparking fan anticipation for the issue’s release on August 28, 2024, to see whether the ax will play a significant role in the story or if it’s merely a striking visual on the cover.
Power Girl #12 Preview Teases Paige Stetler Getting Massive Asgardian Ax
Power Girl’s Mysterious (& Possibly Backstabbing) Date Gifts Her an Asgardian Ax
Paquette and Prianto’s cover art intriguingly blends the mystery of the ax with Power Girl’s romance with Axel, depicting the Asgardian kneeling before Paige and presenting her with the massive weapon. The pose, reminiscent of a proposal, is likely an intentional choice by the artists. Notably, Paige appears to accept the ax, as she is shown holding it after presumably taking it from Axel when he offered it. This could suggest that their relationship is moving in a positive direction and that Paige has forgiven him for the disaster of their first date, or it might simply be a red herring.
While it might be a coincidence, it’s intriguing that Paige’s potential love interest has a name so similar to the weapon he gives her. This similarity raises questions about whether Axel’s character holds more significance than we realize. Until August 28, all of this is just speculation. However, if Paige accepts the long ax and incorporates it into her heroics, it will significantly distinguish her from the rest of the Super-Family, who rarely rely on weapons since their powers are their primary strength. Given how ornate Paige’s ax is, it will be fascinating to see if it enhances her powers or possesses unique abilities of its own.
Giving the Super-Family Weapons Is Actually A Really Cool Idea (& It’s Perfect for the Absolute Universe)
Giving Absolute Superman a Weapon Would Help Sell DC’s Gritter, More Hardcore Take on the Man of Steel
Giving the Super-Family weapons is actually a pretty rad idea. While adding a weapon to long-established heroes like Superman might seem awkward in the main DCU, the upcoming launch of the Absolute Universe offers the perfect opportunity to arm characters like Clark and Kara. DC has hinted that the Absolute Universe will feature hardcore reimaginings of fan-favorite characters. This makes it the ideal chance to equip the Absolute counterparts of Superman, Supergirl, and Power Girl with an official weapon in a way that feels natural and not forced.
Power Girl #12 is available from DC Comics on August 28, 2024!
