Early Life And Education.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a Turkish politician who was born on February 26, 1954, in Kasımpaşa, Beyoğlu, Turkey. He was raised by his parents, Ahmet Erdoğan (1905–1988) and Tensile Erdoğan (née Mutlu; 1924–2011), and grew up with his four siblings Vesile İlgen, Mustafa Erdoğan, Hasan Erdoğan, and Mehmet Erdoğan.
He is of Turkish ethnicity and follows the Islamic faith, being a member of the Community of İskenderpaşa, a Turkish Sufistic community of Naqshbandi tariqah. Erdoğan attended school in Istanbul but spent most of his summers in Güneysu, Rize, where his family originates.
He graduated from Kasımpaşa Piyale Primary School in 1965 and the Istanbul İmam Hatip High School, a religious vocational high school, in 1973. Other co-founders of the AK Party also followed this same educational path.
Career
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was born in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, and studied at the Aksaray Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences before working as a consultant and senior manager in the private sector.
Despite his successful career in the private sector, Erdoğan became involved in politics and was elected as the Welfare Party’s Beyoğlu district chair in 1984 and Istanbul chair in 1985.
However, his political career was not without controversy, as he was convicted in 1998 for inciting religious hatred and banned from politics after reciting a poem that was deemed offensive.
Despite this setback, Erdoğan was released from prison in 1999 and formed the AKP, where he shifted away from openly Islamist policies.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s tenure as prime minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014 was marked by significant achievements and challenges.
Under his leadership, the AKP (Justice and Development Party) won three consecutive elections and implemented policies that led to economic recovery after the 2001 financial crisis.
Erdoğan’s government also began negotiations for Turkey’s EU membership and promoted peace talks to end the long-standing conflict with the PKK.
However, his administration also faced criticism for increasing authoritarianism and limiting freedom of expression. Erdoğan‘s political career continues as he was elected president in 2014 and has remained in power since then.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been a controversial figure as Turkey’s president since 2014. While he was the country’s first directly elected president, his presidency has been marked by democratic backsliding and a move towards a more authoritarian style of government.
His economic policies have also caused issues, leading to high inflation and a depreciation of the Turkish lira. In addition to domestic issues, Erdoğan has also threatened other countries, such as Greece, and intervened in conflicts in Syria and Libya.
He has also expanded Turkey’s role in taking in refugees and launching operations against various groups. Most recently, he responded to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine by taking actions such as closing the Bosphorus to Russian naval reinforcements and mediating a prisoner exchange.
