The New Deadpool Officially Debuts – Just In Time For Marvel To Kill Off Wade Wilson

Warning! Warning! Spoilers for Marvel’s current Deadpool run ahead!

The Marvel Universe officially has a new Deadpool, with Wade Wilson’s daughter Ellie fully embracing her role as his successor – just as the publisher is set to shockingly kill off her father, one of its most popular characters. While Wade’s death might not be permanent, it will be the next step in his heroic journey, and more importantly, it is set to elevate Ellie to a position of prominence.

In a preview first shared by ComicBook.com for Deadpool #6 – written by Cody Ziglar, with art by Rogê Antônio – Ellie and her symbiote “sister” Princess leap into action against a group of bad guys, in her first full mission as Deadpool.

The excitement of this moment is complicated by Ellie’s new “no-kill rule,” decreed by her father at the end of the previous issue, as well as the tension readers will feel knowing Wade’s death has already been announced for the issue.

Through its first five-issue arc, Cody Ziglar’s current ongoing Deadpool volume has established itself among the most exciting new Marvel titles of the year. The crux of the series so far has been Deadpool’s daughter, Ellie Camacho, becoming a bigger part of his life – and quickly establishing herself as the heir to the red-and-black costume. Deadpool #6 will make good on Marvel’s promise to kill off Wade Wilson, something even the company itself seems shocked to be doing. As the synopsis for the issue reads:

Wade Wilson triumphed against Death Grip! This is the first issue of a new arc and killing Deadpool NOW would be an INSANE thing to do. Which is exactly why we’re doing it.

As Marvel notes, this is a stunning creative decision, something that fans should always welcome.

Ellie has proven herself to be every bit as enthusiastically lethal in combat as her famous father, and so this newfound restraint adds an interesting tension to the character’s debut in the role

The preview for Deadpool #6 offers no hint at the circumstances of Wade Wilson’s demise, instead focusing on Ellie’s first full mission as Deadpool while having to contend with her dad’s new “no kill” edict. In just the last several issues of the series, Ellie has proven herself to be every bit as enthusiastically lethal in combat as her famous father, and so this newfound restraint adds an interesting tension to the character’s debut in the role – especially considering that it will be even harder to follow when she inevitably seeks revenge against her father’s killer.

Whatever Wade Wilson’s Fate, Ellie Is A Welcome Addition To The Marvel Universe

Over the past three decades, Wade Wilson has steadily risen among the ranks of the company’s most popular characters, and Marvel seems to think Ellie can do so much faster than her old man.

Considering that the publisher revealed in advance that this series, and Deadpool #6 in particular, would feature the death of Wade Wilson, several things can be deduced by astute readers. First, it is clear that Marvel has a longer-term plan for both Wade and Ellie, as part of this greater generational superhero story arc. Readers can only speculate on what that could be for now, as they have speculated over the last several months how Wade’s death would play out – which is precisely what Marvel wants from its fandom.

Building off that, it can also be inferred from this storyline is the fact that Marvel has faith in Ellie’s ability to carry the role of Deadpool. Over the past three decades, Wade Wilson has steadily risen among the ranks of the company’s most popular characters, and Marvel seems to think Ellie can do so much faster than her old man. If she continues to be as dynamic and entertaining as she has been throughout the first arc of Cody Ziglar’s Deadpool, the publisher will likely be proven right.

Marvel’s Deadpool #6 Is Set To Be A Devastating Passing Of The Torch Moment

The ‘Pool Family Loses Its Patriarch

One of the most engaging aspects of this Deadpool run has been the way it has become a family affair, something that is generally more associated with DC Comics than Marvel. Nevertheless, a unique “Pool Family” has formed around Wade Wilson; in addition to Ellie, the symbiote pet Princess and the mercenary-turned-tutor Taskmaster have become the core cast of the new book. This is going to make it all the more devastating when Deadpool #6 kills off the patriarch of this fledgling found family.

Readers might have prepared themselves for Wade Wilson to pass the torch to a new generation’s Deadpool, but when his death actually comes, no one is going to be truly ready for it.

Still, that is the stuff of drama, and for Ellie, these supporting characters will provide a tether as she is consumed by grief at her loss. They will hopefully anchor her as she is exposed to the wider world of the Marvel Universe, from its incredible wonders to its endless dangers. Readers might have prepared themselves for Wade Wilson to pass the torch to a new generation’s Deadpool, but when his death actually comes, no one is going to be truly ready for it.
