WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers For DC Vs. Vampires: World War V #3!Alfred Pennyworth recently debuted as DC’s newest Green Lantern, but this new role for Batman’s former butler just became even more memorable when he undeniably proved himself a “warrior” by taking down Wonder Woman herself. Despite Alfred’s victory, both iconic characters vow that this won’t be their last confrontation, teasing an epic rematch in the future.
It also establishes that Alfred Pennyworth is the original warrior of the Batfamily, having raised and buried Batman himself.
Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt’s Elseworlds sequel to DC vs. Vampires continues in a preview for World War V #3, with the stakes rising as the newly debuted Green Lantern, Alfred Pennyworth, defeats the vampiric Wonder Woman in a one-on-one battle.
This victory is especially notable as it marks Alfred’s first act after assuming the Emerald Knight mantle, and comes after Diana Prince recently killed Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner and John Stewart in a previous issue. Thus, Alfred’s ability to take down one of the DCU’s most powerful vampires—right after she’s proven capable of killing other Green Lanterns—makes for an incredibly memorable and badass debut. Fans can read the full issue on October 9, 2024.

How Did Alfred Pennyworth Become DC’s Newest Green Lantern?
Batman’s Butler Dons Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern Ring in DC vs. Vampires: World War V #2
Alfred’s fight with Wonder Woman continues from DC vs. Vampires: World War V #2, which ended on the cliffhanger of the butler donning the Green Lantern ring. In this issue, Diana attacks Talia al Ghul and Alfred after Damian Wayne orchestrates the assassination of Vampire Queen Barbara Gordon. After seemingly killing Talia with her Lasso of Truth, Diana turns her attention to Alfred, who is crawling toward a cache of weapons as she mocks his feeble attempts to defend himself. Just as Wonder Woman closes in, Alfred reaches for a weapon, revealing it to be a Green Lantern Power Ring, and blasts Diana back with its power.
This issue also explores Alfred’s connection to the ring, as he tells it, “You have been calling to me this whole time. I wasn’t ready to listen… I am now.” This confirms that the ring chose Alfred. Some may wonder where Alfred got the Green Lantern from, and this traces back to DC vs. Vampires #6, when he cut off a vampire Hal Jordan’s hand, separating him from his ring. Thus, the ring Alfred dons is Hal Jordan’s, a fact confirmed in DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3, when Wonder Woman states, “You had Hal’s ring this whole time.”

Alfred Delivers One of His Hardest Hitting Lines in DC vs. Vampires
While DC vs. Vampires: World War V #2 focused on how Alfred got his Green Lantern ring, issue #3 spotlights his fight with Wonder Woman. The vampiric Amazon immediately goes on the offensive, attacking Alfred while taunting him about her prowess in killing Lanterns and claiming they were true warriors rather than just a “weak old man.” However, throughout her taunts, the butler thoroughly kicks her butt, leaving her bloodied and beaten while he remains in impeccable condition. The most noteworthy aspect of this fight is not just that Alfred defeats her but how he establishes himself as the ultimate “warrior.”
In response to Wonder Woman’s jabs about his lack of knowledge regarding war and the sacrifices it takes to win, Alfred replies, “I may not seem like a warrior to you, but I’ve stood beside them, studied them, raised them. And I’ve buried them with my own hands. So don’t you ever speak to me of sacrifice, woman.” This line is exceptionally savage and emotionally impactful, alluding to Alfred’s multiple losses, including the loss of his pseudo-surrogate son, Bruce Wayne, and his grandchildren. It also establishes that Alfred Pennyworth is the original warrior of the Batfamily, having raised and buried Batman himself.
