About A Boy Stars Nicholas Hoult & Toni Collette Discuss Their On-Screen Reunion Over 20 Years Later

Juror #2 actors Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette, who previously starred together in the 2002 comedy film About a Boy, discussed what it was like to reunite on screen after over 20 years. Hoult and Collette portrayed a mother and son in About a Boy, but have not appeared in a movie together since. In Juror #2, which may be Clint Eastwood’s final movie, Hoult plays Justin Kemp, one of the jurors in a high-profile murder trial, and Collette plays Faith Kellebrew, the prosecutor in the trial.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hoult and Collette talked about what it was like to work together again after so much time. Since Hoult was only 13 years old when About a Boy came out, Collette reflected on how it was different working with him now. Meanwhile, Hoult emphasized how caring Collette always was when they were filming About a Boy. Read their full quotes below:

Collette: It’s amazing to have worked with someone as a kid, and then, suddenly, there they are as a man. It’s surreal because I feel like I’ve played a lot of mothers, and there is a certain maternal feeling that goes with it. I was so fond of you [Hoult], and then to see you as this evolved human and being able to watch him going through [these scenes]. I could see everything in his mind. I could feel the energy of what his emotions were. I felt so proud of him. I was like, ‘My God, look how talented he is.’ It really blew me away. And then we got to hang out. We got to become friends properly, and it’s been a total gift. It’s a treat to come back together again.

Hoult: It was truly brilliant. Since we shot
About a Boy,
we’d seen each other once on a dance floor at a party. But that was it. So, it was so magical. I have such fond memories of
About a Boy
and how kind and caring Toni was for me then. In the time in between, I’ve watched her in so many wonderful things, and she’s one of the most incredible actresses around. She brings joy, light, laughter, and happiness wherever she goes. So, there’s this wonderful feeling of getting to be back in scenes with her and spend time with her.

Nicholas Hoult & Toni Collette’s Characters In Juror #2 Explained

Hoult & Collette Both Play Intriguing Characters In The Courtroom Drama

As mentioned, Hoult portrays Justin Kemp in the cast of Juror #2, a family-man who is called for jury duty. However, as the murder trial proceeds, Justin begins to realize that he may have actually been the person who murdered the victim, Kendall Carter. Collette plays the prosecutor who is trying to prove that Kendall’s boyfriend, James Sythe, was the one who murdered Kendall after they got into an argument at a bar.

This sets up a complicated moral dilemma for Hoult’s character. As the trailer for Juror #2 shows, Justin has a lot on the line, since he has a pregnant wife. The plot of Juror #2 is set to get even more complicated when J.K. Simmons’ character goes on the offensive against Collette’s Faith, and asks her if they ever even considered anyone else. This could potentially lead them to looking into Justin and realizing he was at the same bar as Kendall and James the night she died.
