Dragon Age: The Veilguard – How to Beat Mythal’s Retribution (Boss Guide)

On the path to the secret ending in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you’ll encounter Mythal, whom you either have to defeat in battle or convince that you’re worthy of gaining her Essence. If you succeed in the conversation here, you’ll be on your way to the secret ending of Veilguard, but for those whose Rook is perhaps less conversationally inclined, you’ll need to fight a dragon to succeed. After failing your metaphorical charisma check, prepare to take on Mythal’s Retribution.

[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard]

Mythal is one of the ancient elven gods and a former companion to Solas. She worked with Elgar’nan and Gilhan’nain before the fall of the Titans to free them from Titan rule, but when the time came to form an Elven society in the wake of their rebellion, Elgar’nan and Gilhan’nain chose to become tyrannical leaders rather than creating a society of peace. Mythal sided with the two of them against Solas’ pleas; in his desperation to stop them, Solas killed her in order to take the power he needed to lock the Evanuris behind the Veil. One piece of a now-fragmented Mythal survives in the Crossroads, and that’s the Mythal that players encounter.

Where To Find Mythal

Follow Solas’ Memories To Mythal’s Place Of Rest

After collecting all the Wolf Statuettes in the “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” questline and seeing Solas’ memories, players will have learned quite a bit about the relationship between Mythal and Fen’harel. Oddly enough, you’ll be informed that Morrigan, of all people, wants to talk to you in DA: Veilguard‘s Crossroads. There, she’ll reveal that alongside the shattered piece of Mythal in the Crossroads, another piece resides within her as it has countless other hosts throughout time.

Every companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard comes with their own set of skills to help Rook in combat. Here’s the best way to build each one.

Morrigan tells you that having Mythal’s favor will be a huge boon in the fight to come against the Evanuris. However, in order to gain this power, you’ll need to talk to her. After revealing all this, Morrigan will open up a nearby path that leads to a hidden area of the Crossroads, home to what little remains of Mythal’s spirit.

Morrigan will warn you that while the piece of Mythal that lives in her has been tempered over the years by the sensibilities of her mortal hosts, the part of her that you will talk to has had no such tempering. That means that the level of morality that Mythal operates on is not the same as that of a mortal, so you’ll need to speak to her carefully to avoid conflict. If you’re unable to do so, you’ll find yourself facing Mythal’s Retribution.

How To Beat Mythal’s Retribution

Defeat Mythal To Gain Her Essence

Mythal's essence, a small blue statue vaguely carved to resemble a robed woman wearing a crown

Mythal’s Retribution takes the form of a giant, level 45 lightning dragon, and she is weak to Necrotic and resistant to Lightning. If you’re running a Reaper build, this will be your time to shine. While fighting this fearsome foe, you’ll want at least Lucanis or Emmrich with you, if not both, to take advantage of the elemental matchup. Suppose one source of Necrotic damage is enough for you. In that case, you’ll want your second companion to be able to Prime and or Detonate either your own or your party’s abilities, so make sure you have good class coverage when picking your party.

Davrin and Harding both deal with high burst damage and pretty good stagger abilities, and dragons are most vulnerable when staggered, so consider one of them in your second companion slot.

Mythal has many attacks throughout her fight, though none should be too surprising after the dragons you’ve already faced. Her moves stay pretty consistent, but she adds some new ones at about 60% HP while also summoning living axes to attack you and your party.

Phase 1

Attack

Tip

Lightning Shot

The ground under Rook will flash blue quickly, giving you a small window to dodge before lightning hits the spot. Keep moving to avoid getting hit. Occasionally, she’ll lift into the air and shoot multiple shots before landing once again.

Kick

While behind a dragon is one of the safest places to be, you can still be attacked. Watch out for her back feet kicking at you whenever you get too close to them. This also applies to the front feet, but when you’re up there, you’ve got other things to worry about.

Ground Pound

Mythal’s Retribution will fly up into the air briefly, then slam back down to damage a large area. Time your dodge right to avoid damage here, or sprint away as soon as you see her go up.

Face Slam

Mythal sweeps her huge head across the ground, slamming into anything in its way. This one is pretty telegraphed, so watch out for her lunge to either side before her head lowers.

Charge

Mythal will shake her head once, then charge forward a few paces. If you’re in the way, this will knock you down, but it seems more of a repositioning maneuver than a high-damage attack.

Phase 2 (~60% HP)

Perching atop a cliff, Mythal will shoot lightning at you before moving into her second phase.)

Attack

Tip

Spectral warriors

Calling the power of lightning to her side, Mythal summons armored enemies that stick to the arena’s edges. If you don’t get close to them, they seem to leave you alone.

Breath Attack

Mythal will shoot a beam of lightning in a sweep back and forth across the battlefield. This attack is telegraphed by a shake of her head as she gathers energy in her mouth, which will glow purple-y blue.

Phase 3 (~40% HP)

Mythal returns to the cliffside to shoot more lightning.

Lightning Storm

This attack only occurs while Mythal is on the cliffside, but she will call down a huge storm. This hits most of the battlefield; your best place to dodge is right under her, next to the cliff. Shove yourself up against the side to avoid the damage.

Lightning Arrows

Lightning arrows rain down on a small circle in the area, easily avoidable as long as you see it in time.

The attacks in each phase continue from one to the next; by phase three, Mythal will throw a combination of all of the above attacks at you.

As is typical for dragons, whichever of her legs is glowing is Mythal’s Retribution’s weak point. This can change as the fight progresses, so keep an eye on her as you attack for some extra damage. Your real moment to shine will come once you’ve got Mythal staggered; she’ll fall to the ground, leaving you a brief opening to get some juicy damage.
