Warning! Spoilers for Absolute Batman #3!Batman and Catwoman’s relationship has been one of the greatest romances in comic books for decades, but that relationship has always been complicated. Batman’s promise to end crime is the most important thing in his life, and Catwoman has never fully been on the side of the law, but the Absolute Universe takes their challenging romance a step further.
The Absolute Universe has been one of DC’s greatest recent successes, and fans have been scrambling to get more information. Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder has taken to X to provide these answers, showing a brand-new look at the relationship between Batman and Catwoman in this new universe. While the two have known each other for a long time in the Prime Universe, in the Absolute world, they have a completely new dynamic, as they’re incredibly close childhood friends.
Absolute Batman #3 by Snyder and Nick Dragotta will be the first time that readers see this version of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle interacting. Considering Absolute Batman uses his Prime Universe villains as his family, this version of Batman is no stranger to unique and different relationships from his Prime Universe version. Selina is a major example of this.

In the main DC Universe, Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne only met after becoming more than just regular civilians. The exact circumstances of their meeting are ambiguous. During Tom King’s run on the Batman title, Selina remembers it as being on the street when Bruce first started out fighting crime and hadn’t even become Batman yet. Batman remembers it differently. He believes that they first met on a boat, where Selina was planning to steal something, and she was already Catwoman by this point. In the Absolute Universe, as revealed in Absolute Batman #2, they knew each other much earlier.

Batman and Catwoman are iconic, but after countless break-ups and even wedding-day cold feet, it’s clear that Selina Kyle isn’t Bruce’s ultimate love.
While this new meeting might seem like a small change, it’s actually huge. When Bruce and Selina meet each other as Batman and Catwoman, they’ve already decided who they are. They’ve mostly settled into the kind of people they will be and the things that they believe, making their relationship truly complicated. But in this universe, Bruce and Selina knew each other as kids. As Snyder says, “they knew each other when they were raw and uncertain,” giving both of them far more insight into they other when they realize who they have become as adults.
Batman and Catwoman’s Relationship Is Complicated in Every Universe
There’s More in Store for Bat/Cat in the Absolute Universe
The big issue of Batman and Catwoman’s relationship in the Prime Universe is them trying to get past their difference in beliefs. Bruce is a rich kid who grew up in a lavish mansion and believes that all crime should be eradicated. Selina is someone who grew up in poverty and believes that sometimes the law has to be broken to survive. In the Absolute Universe, they both grew up in poverty, and they grew up together. It seems that no matter what universe they’re in, Batman and Catwoman’s relationship will always be complicated.
