50 Best Cartoon Girl Duos Of All Time Ranked

The best cartoon girl duos have ensured that generations of young women fell in love with animation as a medium. What’s more, pairings of female characters also account for some of the most iconic presences in cartoons and animation of all time. While male duos and boy-girl teams in cartoons are common, the world of animation is surprisingly light on pairs of female characters. Girls in cartoons tend to come in trios, groups, or on their own. However, this only ensures that the very best cartoon girl duos stand out.

Whether it’s classic characters from shows like The Flintstones or Scooby-Doo or pairs of heroines from animated movies from powerhouses like Disney or Pixar, each of the best cartoon girl duos brings something unique. They share a range of dynamics, with some being best friends, others sisters, with mother-daughter duos also being present too (and even some granddaughter-grandmother teams). One thing they all have in common, however, is that they’re incredibly memorable, whether that’s due to them being laugh-out-loud hilarious, sharing a heartwarming (or heartbreaking) relationship, or a mixture of the two.

Scardelita & Adelita

The Book Of Life (2014)

2014’s The Book Of Life from director Jorge R. Guiterrez is often compared to Disney’s Coco due to being released at a similar time and both having plots focusing on characters heading to the Mexican Land of the Dead. However, The Book Of Life has its own strong sense of identity. This partly comes from the characters being much more outlandish, as is the case with its contribution to the many great female cartoon character duos out there – the twins Scardelita and Adelita.

The deceased cousins of hero Manolo, Scardelita (Sandra Equihua) and Adelita (Anjelah Johnson) are twin sisters who died protecting Emiliano Zapata during the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1920. Always bickering even when fighting villains, Scardelita and Adelita are as hilarious as they are thrilling to watch, and easily among the best characters from the Land of the Dead in The Book Of Life – and would likely make great subjects for their own spin-off, too.

In the Mexican town of San Angel, two young men are competing for the affection of their childhood friend Maria — but Xibalba, the mythical ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, interferes in their affairs in an attempt to win a bet with his wife.

The Ugly Stepsisters

Cinderella (1950)

When it comes to classic animated movies, the Ugly Stepsisters in Disney’s 1950 movie Cinderella are perhaps the quintessential example of memorable cartoon girl duos. Never really being shown separately, the Ugly Stepsisters (named Drizella and Anastasia) exist as pure comic relief, and it’s a role they play incredibly well.

While they make life difficult for Cinderella and are antagonists, the Ugly Stepsisters in Cinderella remain an iconic pair of female characters. Everything from their character design to the vocal performances of Rhoda Williams and Lucille Bliss stands out when rewatching Cinderella, and outside perhaps the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella’s loyal mice companions the Ugly Stepsisters are perhaps the most memorable characters in the movie.

48

Veronica & Trixie

The Fairly OddParents (2001-2016)

Nickelodeon’s The Fairly OddParents was one of the most successful animated shows put out by the network, running from 2001 to 2016 (and with revival spinoffs like The Faily OddParents: A New Wish). While they weren’t major characters on the show, high school cheerleaders Veronica and Trixie still rank as an incredibly memorable cartoon girl duo.

While many examples of pairs of female characters stand out because of the emotional dynamic of their relationship, for Trixie and Veronica being memorable is entirely due to the humor in their appearances. Trixie is the most popular girl in school, with Veronica being her best friend. While Trixie is constantly rebuffing Timmy Tuner’s affections, Veronica is secretly in love with him (though treats him with contempt whenever Trixie is around), making for a hilarious secret love triangle.

the fairly oddparents

Nickelodeon’s Fairly OddParents, conceived by Danny Phantom creator Butch Hartman, revolves around teenage boy Timmy Turner’s adventures with his fairy godparents Cosmo and Wanda, his friendship with classmates AJ and Chester, and his attempts to escape his mean babysitter Vicky and his cruel teacher Denzel Crocker. It aired from 2001 to 2017 with 10 seasons and 172 episodes.

Barbara Gordon & Harleen Quinzel

DC Super Hero Girls (2019-Present)

The 2019 TV show DC Super Hero Girls is an animated reimagining of the DC Comics universe specifically designed to bring in new female fans among younger viewers. The show repositions more-or-less every female DC character into either a team of heroes or villains, and, of course, there are plenty of memorable pairings as the show focuses on their lives both with and without capes.

However, of all the DC Super Hero Girls characters, it’s the on-again-off-again friendship between Barbara Gordon and Harleen Quinzel, AKA Batgirl and Harley Quinn which stands out as among the best cartoon girl duos. Despite being on opposite ends of the moral spectrum, neither Barbara nor Harleen can ignore the fact that they enjoy one another’s company, which leads to some surprisingly tender moments when Barbara’s presence causes Harleen to question her villainous ways.

Peggy & Luanne

King Of The Hill (1997-2009)

Played by Kathy Najimy and the late Brittany Murphy in Mike Judge’s animated sitcom King of the Hill, Peggy and Luanne are a rare example of a memorable cartoon girl duo that share an aunt-niece relationship. However, since Luanne lives with Peggy (much to Husband Hank’s chagrin), the pair inevitably find themselves sharing something of a mother-daughter bond.

However, due to Peggy’s soft-spoken nature and Luanne’s ditzy naivety about the world, the pair often find themselves having some truly hilarious conversations. Moments like Peggy trying to gently get Luanne to understand that her trailer tipping over doesn’t mean it stops existing, for example, are some of the most priceless in King of the Hill. While they may not be as iconic or widely recognized as some other female cartoon duos, they’re still incredibly worthy of consideration.

King of the Hill TV Poster

From the creator of Beavis and Butthead comes King of the Hill, an animated comedy series that follows the misadventures of Texan native propane salesman Hank Hill and his family and friends. Between struggling to understand his son, Bobby, keep his wife happy, and find enough time to drink beer and mow his lawn, Hank will realize the simple American life is a bit harder to grasp than he thought, as everyone around him is every bit as eccentric as one would expect. From a ladies’ man who speaks a million words a minute to a paranoid conspiracy theorist, Hank’s friends keep his life more than a little bit interesting.

Hayley & Francine

American Dad (2005-Present)

Seth MacFarlane’s American Dad spent a lot of time in the shadow of Family Guy, but over the years has gained a solid following in its own right thanks to its unique characters. Among them are the mother-daughter duo of Francine and Hayley Smith, and the pair share one of the strangest parent-child bonds in any animated family.

However, the odd relationship Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane) and Francine (Wendy Schaal) have is also what cements them as one of the best cartoon girl duos. Whenever the two interact or share an episode, it quickly becomes apparent that Francine was even more of a rebel in her youth than the already rebellious Hayley. Francine can’t let old habits stay hidden when she spends too long with her daughter, and the results are inevitably hilarious.

44

Laurel & Corey

Onward (2020)

Laurel and Corey in Onward are truly unique among the best cartoon girl duos. They’re both middle-aged career women who form a friendship over the course of the movie, and by the end of it conquer their fears together and save the day. Laurel Lightfoot (Julia Lousi-Dreyfus) is the mom of Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt). When her sons go on a dangerous voyage to discover magic and reconnect with their dead father, she makes it her mission to save them.

Along the way she meets Corey (Octavia Spencer). Corey is a manticore who now owns a bar, but she was once a fearsome warrior. She ends up tagging along with Laurel on her quest, and the two quickly spark up a connection. The scenes with Laurel and Corey are the perfect mix of humorous and action-filled, and this pair of female animated characters are easily the highlight of Onward.

Pixar’s Onward takes place in a land filled with mythical creatures. It concerns the story of brothers Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt), who learn that their long-lost father had unlocked the ancient power of magic, something long rendered obsolete by technological advances. The brothers learn they have just 24 hours to resurrect their father and set off on a magical quest across the land to reunite their family.

Ami & Yumi

HiHi Puffy AmiYumi (2004-2006)

The 2004-2006 show Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi was among the most bizarre series ever put out by Cartoon Network, and was filled to the brim with the metal music and anime obsession of 2000s pre-teen and young teen culture. Nominated for three Annie Awards, Hi Hi Puffy Ami-Yumi focused on an animated version of the real-life Japenese pop duo Puffy AmiYumi.

In the show, Yumi and Ami tour the globe, though many of the stories are focused on Japan. The mismatched personalities of the cheerful and outgoing Ami and gruff and edgy Yumi make their friendship all the more endearing, as is the case with many paired female cartoon characters. While the show is niche, for fans (even casual ones) it’s hard to deny that Amy and Yumi are among the best cartoon girl duos.

42

Mei & Ming

Turning Red (2021)

2021’s Turning Red wasn’t the success story Disney or Pixar hoped due to the Covid-19 Pandemic leading to a direct-to-Disney+ release. However, its central characters Mei (Roslie Chiang) and Ming (Sandra Oh) are one of the best cartoon girl duos to appear in a modern animated movie, especially when it comes to mother-daughter pairings. Their relationship is central to the plot of Turning Red, and the deep exploration of their emotions regarding one another also makes them incredibly relatable characters.

It’s this that makes 13-year-old Mei and her mother, Ming, so memorable as characters (perhaps even more memorable than the plot of Turning Red itself). Most viewers, especially those that are mothers, daughters, or both can relate to the complexity of their relationship. The hilarity and heartwarming moments as they try to reach an understanding with one another are the standout scenes in Turning Red, and the pair remain one of the most authentic-seeming parent-child characters Disney or Pixar have created.

When 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian Mei Lee transforms into a giant red panda, she discovers that she has inherited her family curse. Triggered by any strong emotion, Mei’s ability tests her strength of character and her reserve, as well as prompting a previously undiscovered rebellious streak. Torn between accepting the changes she’s going through and obeying her parents, Mei must navigate her responsibilities to her friends, her family, and herself.

Sophie & The Witch Of The Wastes

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

2004’s Howl’s Moving Castle from director Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most successful Studio Ghibli movies so far, and also has one of their most memorable female character duos. Loosely based on the Dianna Wynne Jones novel of the same name, Howl’s Moving Castle follows the adventures of young hat-maker Sophie as she finds herself traveling (and falling in love with) the wizard Howl.

However, Sophie doesn’t find her way to Howl until after she’s cursed to become an old woman by the movie’s antagonist, the Witch of the Wastes. While initially foes, their dynamic changes in the second half of the film when the Witch loses most of her powers and also becomes an elderly woman. The two then form an unlikely companionship filled with many adorable moments that feel like authentic interactions between two friends in the twilight years of their lives.

Rogue & Shadowcat

X-Men: Evolution (2001-2003)

There have been multiple animated versions of Marvel’s X-Men over the decades, each of which featured some incredibly memorable pairs of female characters. However, when it comes to the best cartoon girl duos, Rogue and Shadowcat in the 2001-2003 show X-Men: Evolution are undeniably the most worthy of consideration. The pair are rarely seen together in other X-Men shows and comics, but Evolution repositions them as best friends – and it works incredibly well.

X-Men: Evolution deviated a lot from other X-Men adaptations. For example, Rogue and Shadowcat (along with the rest of the team) attend a regular highschool. Being the same age, Rogue and Shadowcat form an incredibly close friendship in X-Men: Evolution, and the sultry Goth personality of Rogue somehow makes for some incredibly memorable scenes when paired with the preppy and upbeat Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.

X-Men Evolution

X-Men: Evolution is an animated television series that chronicles the teenage years of various X-Men characters as they learn to control their powers and confront adversaries. The series reimagines Marvel’s mutants in a high school setting, focusing on the challenges they face both as regular students and burgeoning superheroes. Notable characters such as Wolverine, Cyclops, and Rogue navigate their dual identities under the mentorship of Professor Xavier.

Robyn & Mebh

Wolfwalkers (2020)

Robyn and Mebh in the 2020 independent animated fantasy movie Wolfwalkers may not be the most widely known cartoon girl duo out there, but this doesn’t mean they’re not one of the best. From directors Tomm Moore as the final part of his Irish Folklore trilogy (which also includes 2009’s The Secret of Kells and 2014’s The Song of the Sea), Wolkwalkers focuses on two unlikely female friends who – by the end of the movie – become an absolutely unforgettable pair.

Robyn (Honor Kneafsey) is a young hunter who, while in the woods, discovers Mebh (Eva Whittaker) – a young girl with the ability to turn into a wolf. Initially distrustful of the mystical girl, Robyn eventually forms such a close bond with Mebh that she puts her life on the line to defend her and the rest of the Wolfwalkers. It’s both a heartwarming tale and one of the best modern examples of two female friends in an animated fantasy movie (a dynamic which, sadly, is quite rare).

Wolfwalkers follows the story of a young apprentice hunter named Robyn and her father as they arrive in Ireland to help eliminate the last wolf pack. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she befriends Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night. Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, this animated film explores themes of friendship, folklore, and self-discovery set against a stunningly illustrated backdrop.

Lois & Meg

Family Guy (1999-Present)

There aren’t many Family Guy episodes that can be classed as Lois and Meg stories, though whenever the mother-daughter duo interacts the results are inevitably hilarious. While there are plenty of scenes where Lois tries (and often fails) to console Meg with some motherly advice, most of the time they’re brutal with their comments to one another. In many ways, Lois and Meg in Family Guy are the exact opposite of Marge and Lisa in The Simpsons, and this is precisely why they’re such a memorable duo.

For example, when Meg announces she’s going out on a date, Lois just breaks down into laughter and tells her to stop lying. While they’re not a positive example of a parent-child relationship they are still one of the best and most memorable cartoon girl duos, with their moments together always full of the edgy humor Family Guy is beloved for.

37

Cheryl & Pam

Archer (2009-2023)

The FX animated spy-comedy Archer includes a whole cast of larger-than-life characters. None are forgettable, whether it’s the titular super-spy Sterling Archer himself, his overbearing mother Mallory, on-again/off-again girlfriend and fellow spy Lana Kane, or even Cyril Figgis the accountant. However, when it comes to the best cartoon girl duos, it’s Pam and Cheryl from Archer that easily rank among the most timeless.

The head of HR for an international spy agency and the receptionist of its owner respectively, Pam (Amber Nash) and Cheryl (Pam Greer) areboth uniquely unhinged. Despite having desk jobs, the pair’s no-holds-barred egging on of one another’s worst and most reckless traits ensure they find themselves present for some of Archer’s deadliest missions – with hilarious results.

Princess Adora & Catra

She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power (2018-2020)

While Netflix’s reimagining of She-Ra: Princess of Power may have been divisive among fans of the original 1985-1987 Saturday morning cartoon, 2018’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power introduced viewers to a whole roster of strong female characters. While there were several pairings of various Princess of Power characters that stood out, it’s the central tension and rivalry between former allies Princess Adora (AKA She-Ra) and Catra that elevates them to being one of the best cartoon girl duos of all time.

Adora and Catra grew up together as orphans and were raised to be soldiers. During their service to the evil Hordak, they form a fierce but healthy rivalry. However, once Adora switches sides and takes up arms against Hordak as part of the rebellion, she and Catra become reluctant adversaries who end up saving one another from death or capture on more than one occasion. It’s an incredibly complex relationship that is incredibly satisfying to watch play out.

Shego & Kim Possible

Kim Possible (2002-2007)

Very few of the best cartoon girl duos are enemies, and the most memorable pairs tend to be friends or family members. However, Kim and Shego from the Disney XD animated adventure show Kim Possible are a notable exception. The titular spy Kim Possible has many enemies, it’s with Shego that she’s a truly iconic animated duo in a similar way to Batman and The Joker.

Shego has a similar appearance to Kim, almost being a straightforward color-swap. Also once a hero herself, Shego is one of Kim’s most dangerous adversaries, if not the most dangerous. Despite the chief antagonist being Dr. Drakken, Shego soon became the villain synonymous with Kim Possible. Shego and Kim Possible are one of only a handful of female mortal enemies that stand out as being truly iconic, and they continue to be so almost two decades after Kim Possible finished in 2007.

Kim Possible

Kim Possible follows the high school student Kim Possible, who leads a double life as a global crime-fighting hero, thwarting evil plots with the help of her best friend Ron Stoppable, his pet mole rat Rufus, and tech genius Wade. The animated series combines action, humor, and teenage drama, showcasing Kim’s ability to balance her ordinary and extraordinary responsibilities.

Katie & Linda

The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (2021)

The central relationship conflict in Netflix’s 2021 sci-fi comedy The Mitchells vs. The Machines is between daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson) and father Rick (Danny McBride). However, while there aren’t as many moments between Katie and her Mom, Linda (Maya Rudolph), this doesn’t prevent the mother-daughter duo being one of the best female animated pairs in a 2020s movie and a memorable one overall.

There are several interactions between the two which show just how close Katie and Lina must be (which is also likely why Katie’s relationship with Rick is the source of dramatic tension, as she’s not as close with her dad). It’s Linda who encourages Katie to make an effort with her Dad, and coaches her daughter on how to be patient with Rick’s stubbornness. These moments give a glimpse into what’s clearly an incredibly strong mother-daughter bond, and it makes Linda and Katie an endearing pair.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines is an animated action-comedy that sees creative outsider Katie Mitchell  as she is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people.” However, when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last family road trip, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot apocalypse. Katie and her father will need to find common ground to stand a chance against the armies of smartphones, fridges, and whatever other sentient machines are out to capture humanity.

GoGo & Honey Lemon

Big Hero 6 (2014)

GoGo and Honey Lemon first appeared in 2014’s Big Hero 6 as two members of the Marvel Comics superhero team. However, while they shared several memorable moments in the movie, it’s the 2017-2021 animated show Big Hero 6: The Series which cements them as one of the best cartoon girl duos. From the fourth episode, “Big Roommates 2”, which saw Honey Lemon move in with GoGo, the pair were featured as a duo in several episodes.

Like many of the best pairs of animated female characters, the clash of personalities accounts for a great deal of what makes Honey Lemon and GoGo so memorable. The edgy adrenaline junkie GoGo is the opposite of the cheery and bubbly Honey Lemon in almost every way. However, this only serves to become the foundation of their friendship, and ensures they’re the center of many of the best episodes of Big Hero 6: The Series.

Susan & Mary Test

Johnny Test (2008-2014)

Johnny Test ran on Cartoon Network from 2008 to 2014 and introduced viewers to a pair of iconic animated twins – Mary and Susan Test, the siblings of the titular hero, Johnny. Mary (Brittney Wilson/Ashleigh Ball) and Susan (Maryke Hendrikse) were integral to the premise of Johnny Test, and the role they played gave them plenty of opportunities to establish themselves as an iconic pair of cartoon scientists.

Most episodes of Johnny Test see Susan and Mary experimenting on Johnny in some way. Sometimes this is to impress their neighbor, Gil, other times it’s because Johnny has blackmailed or bribed them into using their scientific genius to help him out. Whatever the reason, the results are hilarious, and the way the twins speak in eerie unison ensures they’re incredibly memorable.

Beth & Space Beth

Rick & Morty (2013-Present)

Being the only pair of characters who are clones instantly makes Beth and Space Beth from Rick & Morty unique among the best cartoon girl duos, though this is fitting given the bombastic sci-fi narratives of the show. Both voiced by Sarah Chalke, Space Beth was introduced in the Rick & Morty season 4 finale “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri”. She is either a clone of Beth Smith, Rick’s daughter, or the original, with the joke being that even Rick isn’t sure which is which.

Space Beth returns multiple times throughout the rest of the show, and she and the Earth-based Beth quickly form a romantic relationship. This makes for some incredibly unique comedic moments that only a show like Rick & Morty could pull off and ensures that Beth and Space Beth stand out among the best cartoon girl duos that are also couples.

Rick and Morty Poster

Rick and Morty is an adventure/Sci-Fi animated series that follows the intergalactic, inter-dimensional adventures of super-genius Rick Sanchez and his less-than-average grandson Morty Smith. Rick’s daughter, Beth, his granddaughter, Summer, and his hated stepson, Jerry, also take center stage more often than not. Hailing from creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the series blends comedy with science fiction as a way of exploring a wide variety of themes aimed at an adult audience.
