The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a great job with bringing some of the most iconic villains in comics history to the big and small screens, but one upcoming iconic foe may have too much pressure behind them to live up to the hype. While Marvel is already setting up Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as the next major foe in the universe with the 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday, there is another long-rumored villain set up that may be appearing in 2025. This villain’s reputation, however, will be difficult to live up to.
The power of MCU’s villains has varied, with some being human and others being gods. However, Agatha All Along has changed the perception of what an MCU villain could be when it revealed Rio Vidal’s identity as Death. With this in mind, bigger and more terrifying foes that embody ideas and powers not yet dreamed of in the MCU may be appearing in the future. One of these most iconic villains has been rumored since 2021, and there seem to be plans to bring them to the small screen next year.
Mephisto Has Been Theorized To Appear In The MCU So May Different Ways Over The Years
Mephisto May Finally Appear In Ironheart In 2025
The devil in the Marvel Universe, Mephisto, has been rumored to join the MCU ever since theories surfaced concerning him being behind the hex in Marvel’s WandaVision. After this was not the case, the character continued to be rumored in the universe. Plot details for Spider-Man: No Way Home were pulled from a comic that featured Mephisto, leading to rumors of him in the film. After this, he was rumored to appear in Agatha All Along, with Jennifer Kale even mentioning his name in the show.
The character has been rumored to be played in the MCU by Sacha Baron Cohen, with some reporting that the character will debut in Ironheart. With the series set to integrate the worlds of technology and spirituality and with the show set to feature The Hood prominently, this appearance would make sense. However, it is worth keeping in mind how much the character has already been rumored to appear in other programs. This may also wind up being immaterial when the series is finally released.
MCU’s Huge Number Of Mephisto Theories Might Complicate An Actual Debut For The Villain
It Is Difficult To Live Up To The Hype And Expectation For The Marvel Villain
After so many rumors concerning Mephisto, and especially Mephisto’s name being mentioned in Agatha All Along, there is now so much expectation for the villain to live up to. While the character is certainly an enormous and terrifying force, it is difficult to consider effective stories that would use this villain effectively. Even if a charismatic performer like Sacha Baron Cohen does take on the role, living up to the hope that audiences have had for the character is a tall order.
In all likelihood, when Marvel does introduce Mephisto, the villain will be used sparingly. With such incredible spiritual power behind him, Mephisto will need to stay mostly detached from the bulk of the storytelling in the universe. Whatever is done, it will put too much pressure on the mere presence of the character, and this could be at the expense of the story. Following this, Marvel must be very careful how they use Mephisto, if they ever decide to do so at all.
