The world of SpongeBob Squarepants continues to expand, and its latest adventure is the spinoff movie Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, and a big surprise is that it continues a 25-year-old gag that hasn’t gotten old at all. The success of Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants has led to a franchise with comic books, theme park rides, video games, and movies, and it’s now expanding with spin-off movies. The first SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off movie is Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, made in the 3D animation style that the franchise has been exploring in movies and the TV show Kamp Koral.
Although Saving Bikini Bottom focuses mostly on Sandy (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence), it also features SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and the rest of Bikini Bottom’s most notable residents. Saving Bikini Bottom sees the title town being scooped out of the ocean, with only Sandy and SpongeBob saving themselves. Sandy and SpongeBob travel to Texas to rescue Bikini Bottom and all its residents, and Sandy enlists her family to help them. Saving Bikini Bottom has all the elements of a SpongeBob SquarePants story, including a running gag that still makes me laugh.

Fred & His Leg Still Can’t Catch A Break
The same type of humor found in SpongeBob SquarePants’ TV show and movies is in Saving Bikini Bottom, including some of the show’s most famous jokes and running gags. One that has become so popular that it has been the subject of countless memes is the “my leg!” gag, brought to all of us by a brown fish named Fred. All the residents of Bikini Bottom have dealt with SpongeBob’s (and Patrick’s) many disasters for years, but Fred seems to have some truly bad luck as he always hurts his leg, exclaiming the famous line.
Fred runs in front of Mr. Krabs and the Krusty Krab and climbs to the latter’s iconic sign.
Fred made his debut in SpongeBob SquarePants in season 1’s episode “Boating School”, and since then, he has been a recurring, minor character who always hurts his leg in some way. Fred was also included in Saving Bikini Bottom, and he appeared pretty early on in the movie, as it doesn’t waste time to go straight into the big problem: Bikini Bottom being scooped out. During the panic triggered by this, Fred runs in front of Mr. Krabs and the Krusty Krab and climbs to the latter’s iconic sign.
Fred closes the shell in panic and crushes his leg, exclaiming his famous line. However, seconds later, Mrs. Puff crashes her boat on the sign’s pole and it falls, opening for a second only to close again and crush Fred’s other leg, with him exclaiming “my other leg!”. Even though Fred has hurt his leg in SpongeBob Squarepants for years, I still find it to be a funny gag as it keeps happening at random times or during hilarious and chaotic moments, and it might be the show’s best gag so far.

Fred’s Leg Injuries Were Shown In Saving Bikini Bottom
Fred has appeared in several SpongeBob SquarePants episodes but not always getting hurt, though his constant leg injury is what has made him famous. For many years, Fred’s leg injury happened off-screen, which made his “my leg!” exclamation a lot funnier. However, Saving Bikini Bottom continues a new change by showing both of Fred’s leg injuries on screen, and they were still pretty funny (in large part thanks to the chaotic context around them). It’s to be seen if Fred’s injuries will continue to be shown on-screen from now on, but it’s still a great SpongeBob SquarePants running gag.
