All 8 Movies & TV Shows Leaving Amazon Prime Video This Month

Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video boasts a large selection of movies and TV shows in its library available to subscribers, but much of that content is temporary, with a number of titles leaving each month. With the large backing from Amazon, Prime Video has emerged as one of the biggest streaming services around, offering a giant catalog of previously released movies and shows while also developing acclaimed original content. However, Prime Video’s offerings disappear on a monthly basis on purpose, planned through contracts with film and television distributors.

August 2024 removed several notable titles from Prime Video from blockbuster movies to acclaimed dramas. The horror comedy Renfield starring Nicolas Cage left Prime Video on August 8, while Jason Statham’s action movie Safe was removed on August 1. September 2024 also features a small number of titles being removed, including an Oscar-nominated international movie and a family-friendly superhero adventure. Users can check out every departing title and how long they have to catch them before they are gone.

The Best Movies And TV Shows Leaving Prime Video September 2024

Megamind (2010)

The biggest title leaving Prime Video in September is Megamind, which is not only an excellent animated comedy but also an underrated superhero story. Will Ferrell provides the voice of the titular character, a supervillain who does battle with Earth’s mightiest hero, Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt) but always loses. During one of these evil schemes, Megamind seemingly defeats his archnemesis and succeeds in his plan of taking over the world. However, he is then faced with the difficult decision of what to do next.

Like the Despicable Me movies, Megamind has a lot of fun playing around with the supervillain tropes and exploring what it would be like if they were a more sympathetic and complex character than how they are typically seen. Ferrell makes for a great conflicted villain while Pitt is hilarious in his supporting role. The rest of the voice cast further elevates the movie with Jonah Hill and Tina Fey in the ensemble. Those looking for an ideal family-friendly bit of fun should check it out on Prime Video before it is gone on September 1.

A War (2016)

There are a lot of great international movies that can slip under the radar on streaming, but one that should be highlighted on Prime Video is A War. The Danish movie stars Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy on Game of Thrones) as a commander of a Danish company of soldiers in Afghanistan. While he and his soldiers struggle with fighting the Taliban and protecting the civilians, the commander finds himself being accused of war crimes and facing trial back home.

With A War earning an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, it should be a must-see on Prime Video before it leaves on September 7. There have been a lot of modern war movies that have looked at the complexities of the 21st-century battlefields, but this is a unique and harrowing story of those who fight with courage and the mistakes that can still be made along the way.

Xchange (2001)

Stephen Baldwin and Kim Coates looking scared in Xchange

While Xchange might not be a well-known or acclaimed movie, its clever sci-fi premise might be interesting enough for Prime Video users to check out before it leaves the platform on September 7. The movie takes place in a future in which people are able to switch places by transferring their minds into each other’s bodies. Kim Coates plays an executive who is forced to make the “exchange” as part of a business deal.

However, when he learns he has switched places with a dangerous terrorist who has taken his body, he is transferred into a temporary clone body (Stephen Baldwin) in order to stop the villain. The wild premise has to contend with a low budget, but there are still some fun ideas here. It is one of those sci-fi ideas that make Xchange a good candidate to receive a bigger-budget remake at some point.
