All Games Revealed At PlayStation State Of Play (September 2024)

PlayStation‘s September 2024 State of Play offered a look at a variety of games coming to the console in the future, looking ahead in a year that’s been defined by ups and downs for PlayStation. Heights like the popular release of Helldivers 2 and the critical acclaim of Astro Bot reaffirmed how great the console’s exclusives can be, while the two-week lifespan of hero shooter Concord and the disappointingly high price of the PS5 Pro aren’t attracting the same love.

Anyone tired of PlayStation leaning on remasters won’t be seeing the end of those any time soon, but there’s still some exciting stuff coming out of the September 2024 State of Play announcements and updates. From a Ghost of Tsushima sequel to a couple of major DLC announcements, the September State of Play covered a lot of ground.

Ghost of Yotei Is An Exciting Sequel To A PS4 Hit

Ghost Of Tsushima Gets A Successor

One of Sony’s biggest PS 4 hits was Ghost of Tsushima, and the big announcement to close the September 2024 State of Play (viewable in full on the PlayStation YouTube channel) is a sequel called Ghost of Yōtei. Like the first game, Ghost of Yōtei seems set to focus on open world exploration and stealth-oriented action. This one is set centuries later, however, jumping from 1274 to 1603 and following a new character named Atsu as he travels across a region in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.

Ghost of Tsushima was one of the best graphical showcases of what the PS4 could do, and Ghost of Yōtei is pushing things forward again with the additional power offered by the PS5. The reveal trailer showcases some jaw-dropping landscapes that accompany impressive realism with striking art design, especially in shots of horses riding across wide-open plains. Ghost of Yōtei is slated for a 2025 release without any further specifics provided for the launch window.

Horizon Zero Dawn Receives A Remaster & More

Aloy’s Adventures Are Sort Of Continuing

Horizon Zero Dawn might not seem like a game that’s desperately in need of a remaster, but with Sony leaning on the IP as a big part of the modern PlayStation brand, it’s getting one anyway. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered looks to be taking full advantage of the hardware capabilities of both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Everything from shaders and textures to character models is getting tweaked, but the best change might be new mocap that could help with some of the game’s stiffer conversations.

It’s also coming to PC, where Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is currently available. The original game already received some graphical improvements in both the PC port and a free upgrade for PS5 players, just ones that weren’t as substantial as the new changes. Getting Remastered without a copy of the original game costs $49.99, but Horizon Zero Dawn owners can upgrade for $9.99 instead. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will release on October 31, 2024 on PS5 and the Epic Games storefront.

The State of Play also offered another look at LEGO Horizon Adventures, a family-friendly take on the IP that adds in concepts like co-op and base building. A new trailer spotlighted a deluxe edition that adds outfits themed around LittleBigPlanet and Ratchet & Clank along with a few other bonuses. LEGO Horizon Adventures is now confirmed to release on November 14, 2024, giving it a prime spot for the holiday season.

PS5 Remasters Of Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver And Lunar

Two Classic Franchises Are Making A Comeback

Looking further back into PlayStation’s history, a couple of classic franchises are also getting remasters. The classic PlayStation series Legacy of Kain returns on December 10, 2024 with Legacy of Kain 1+2 Remastered, which uses the source code of the original game but makes a few key graphical changes to elements like character models. A toggle makes it possible to freely switch the game back to the original graphics for those keen on a more classic experience.

JRPG fans can get their hands on two elusive classics with Lunar Remastered Collection, which packages Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue together. The remaster, which will also be available on other major platforms, sticks to pixel art with some tweaks. Lunar Remastered Collection is set for a Spring 2025 release.

The Midnight Walk Looks Creepy But Gorgeous

A Uniquely Frightening Game For 2025

A night-time scene featuring an eerie handcrafted creature in the game The Midnight Walk.

The Midnight Walk is the new game from the creators of Lost in Random, a fairy tale adventure with some beautiful artwork that leans heavily on the roll of the dice. The gorgeous handcrafted style persists in The Midnight Walk, just with more of a horror-tinged flair than before.

It doesn’t have a specific release date yet, The Midnight Walk is set to release in Spring 2025 on both PS5 and PS VR2. The experience could provide some especially memorable frights in VR, and it looks worthy of attention in either of the planned formats, especially for anyone who prefers scares to have some charm.

Palworld Is Now Available On The PlayStation 5

The Creature Collecting Hit Makes Its Way Over

Palworld, previously only available on Xbox and PC, is now available on PS5 after a surprise release announcement at the State of Play. As an obvious competitor to the Pokémon series, Palworld mixes a very familiar creature design style with an edgier tone, including guns, black market sales, and Pal butchering. The game was recently hit with a lawsuit from Nintendo that alleges infringement of a currently undisclosed patent.

The gameplay of Palworld centers around a survival crafting loop, with resource collection and base-building mechanics driving the experience rather than a focus on a discrete narrative adventure. It’s not the most original thing out there, but it’s nonetheless managed to attract plenty of fans since its January release on PC and Xbox platforms.

Aside from new announcements, release date updates were a big part of PlayStation’s September 2024 State of Play broadcast. Some highlights in that regard are Fantasian: Neo Dimension on December 5, 2024, Dynasty Warriors: Origins on January 17, 2025, and Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, 2025.

As far as DLC goes, Astro Bot is getting a free update with more levels and bots, Alan Wake is set for a second expansion called The Lake House, and Stellar Blade will receive a long-awaited photo mode along with a Nier: Automata collaboration DLC. Over on the PS VR2 side of things, Metro Awakening‘s November 7 release date and Hitman: World of Assassination are a couple of highlights.

Without much fat in between reveals, Sony packed a lot of updates and announcements into the September 2024 State of Play Showcase. The full list of titles that appeared in the broadcast is as follows:

Although the games revealed in the showcase may not change the mind of any PlayStation skeptics, it’s nice to have an update on what’s currently in the pipeline. Even if the new remasters aren’t worth double-dipping, they could be good pick-ups for those who never played the original titles, and Ghost of Yōtei is a genuinely exciting major announcement. All the updates on multi-platform games are also appreciable, making PlayStation‘s September 2024 State of Play a worthwhile endeavor.
