Over twenty years after the initial release of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the show is finally getting an animated movie, Aang: The Last Airbender. The film will take place after the events of ATLA but before Korra, with Aang now a young adult. Aang: The Last Airbender‘s release date is set for January 2026. Some members of the Gaang have already been cast, with Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, and Dionne Quan as Toph. David Bautista is set to play the antagonist, and Steven Yeun has now been cast in an undisclosed role.
Yeun’s previous work in the animation industry has covered a wide variety of characters, including struggling young hero Mark Grayson and other variants in Invincible, reformed bully Steve Palchuk in Tales of Arcadia, and hotheaded second-in-command turned leader Keith in Voltron: Legendary Defender. He also voiced Wan in The Legend of Korra, who was the first Avatar in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. While we don’t know what character he’ll play in the upcoming film, it’s exciting to see Yeun return to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Learning more about the casting for Aang: The Last Airbender only makes me more excited for the movie, and big names like Steven Yeun are a reminder of how seriously Avatar Studios is taking their first feature film. Steven Yeun is one of the first cast members to be announced outside the main members of Team Avatar, so his casting means we can look forward to other such reveals in the near future.

Each Avatar in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise learns from the past, whether by listening to advice or avoiding previous mistakes.
The fact that we don’t know anything about Yeun’s character is also exciting. It’s likely that they don’t want to give too many specifics about character details outside the characters from the original show to keep the storyline of the new film a surprise. It’s possible that Yeun could be returning as Wan, connecting Aang to a time much earlier in the Avatar cycle and setting a foundation for the upcoming sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens.
While Yeun could be playing Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s first Avatar, he could also be playing an entirely new character, or he could play a character from the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender who exists in other forms of media but hasn’t made it to the screen yet. No matter what character Yeun plays, his casting could mean great things for the film.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s First Animated Movie Should Be A Big Event
It’s Been Years Since This Version Of Aang And His Friends Were On The Screen
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender television show was popular enough to spawn a massive franchise for a reason, and while its world is a big part of it, its main characters are also a part of what makes Avatar: The Last Airbender shine. Avatar: The Last Airbender has continued with comics and the Netflix live-action reboot, but this will be the first on-screen continuation centered around Aang’s story since the original show ended.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender books are great additions to the animated show’s universe, but what is the chronological order of the novels?
Aang: The Last Airbender is scheduled to be released theatrically, showing just how big its scale has the potential to be. It’s also the return of Lauren Montgomery, who was a storyboard artist for the original show and will be directing the feature film. The film could be a chance for former fans of the original series who haven’t kept up with everything else that Avatar Studios has put out to return to a world they once enjoyed. Its release as a theatrical film could also encourage a new generation to get to know the story of Aang and his friends.
How Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Film Will Compare To The TV Show
Aang: The Last Airbender Will Take Place Years After The Original TV Series
Being a theatrical film, Aang: The Last Airbender has a chance to be a much bigger production than the original series. It will have a bigger budget, and its story should be tighter and more self-contained in comparison to a three-season television show. Based on the casting of Steven Yeun, it’s also possible that we’ll see more big names added to the cast list playing new characters.
A large part of what makes returning to the time of Avatar: The Last Airbender so exciting is getting to see Team Avatar back together on screen.
It will be important for the film to balance character development with the plot. Since it’s been so long since the original show, it would be disappointing if the movie didn’t focus enough on its main characters and instead were to focus on whatever current issue they get caught up in. A large part of what makes returning to the time of Avatar: The Last Airbender so exciting is getting to see Team Avatar back together on screen.
While we don’t have plot details for the film yet, we can expect it to build upon the foundation of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender television show. Regardless, Aang: The Last Airbender offers an exciting future for the Avatar franchise. As it’s been twenty years since the series first aired, and its original audience has grown up, it seems fitting that the new movie will feature Aang now as an adult.
