One of your companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, Shadowheart, has the opportunity to undergo a significant makeover change, specifically acquiring white hair, but only if you complete a few prerequisites during a mission in Act 2. Since this is part of the official story, players have the opportunity to make this change despite not being able to customize their companions.
This article contains spoilers for major events that take place in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Specifically, the choices relating to the Nightsong quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 are the ones that will impact whether Shadowheart’s hair changes, but that’s not all. Depending on how the quest plays out, Shadowheart will make big changes to her life, significantly changing her character for the rest of the game.

When completing the tasks related to Ketheric Thorm’s boss fight, you will encounter his prisoner, Nightsong. How To Find The Nightsong In Baldur’s Gate 3
Finding the Nightsong is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s longest quests, with deep links to companion quests and choices that can affect the final battle.
It is entirely optional whether you want Shadowheart to kill or spare Nightsong in BG3, but if you let Shadowheart kill Nightsong, her hair will not change, and she will continue down a much darker path for the rest of the story. If you allow Balthazar to take her away to Ketheric Thorm, the case remains the same and will result in Shadowheart leaving your party permanently.
Although sparing Nightsong is optional, it is highly recommended for reasons beyond the change to Shadowheart. While fighting Ketheric Thorm,
if you have spared Nightsong, she will join you in the boss fight
, making it noticeably easier.
Therefore, to make the change present for Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you must ensure Shadowheart spares Nightsong’s life. Depending on your relationship with Shadowheart up to this point, you can let Shadowheart make the decision herself, as she already knows that this is the right thing to do. However, if you’re not sure what she will do, you can influence the decision.
Should You Change Shadowheart’s Hair In Baldur’s Gate 3?
Decide Whether Shadowheart Will Remain Morally Good Or Evil
The choice related to Nightsong will lead Shadowheart to confront her faith in the goddess Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3, thus being shunned by the Lady of Darkness. For those looking to make the best moral decision, this is it, as Shar is an evil-aligned entity who has been manipulating Shadowheart to do her dirty deeds. By sparing Nightsong, Shadowheart renounces Shar as shown in ZaFrostPet‘s video above, which initiates a short period of internal conflict.

One Shadowheart Decision In Baldur’s Gate 3 Will Completely Ruin Act 3
Shadowheart’s story in Baldur’s Gate 3 might be one of its most interesting arcs, but it’s all too easy to significantly hurt Act 3 with one choice.
Once Shadowheart comes to terms with her big decision at the end of Act 2, she will learn more about her past and eventually embrace Selûne as the goddess worthy of her devotion. To reflect her newly recovered faith, Shadowheart will then change her hair color from black to white, or silver, and get rid of her bangs.
Although the change happens as a direct result of Act 2 decisions, this change technically occurs at the beginning of Act 3, where your relationship will also progress further if you are romancing Shadowheart in BG3. Her shift in faith is the major turning point in Shadowheart’s companion story in Baldur’s Gate 3 and one that is accompanied by a bright makeover.
