Brandon Sanderson’s Disappointing Stormlight Archive Update Could Work In The Next Book’s Favor

The Stormlight Archive concluded its first, five-book arc with Wind and Truth, and Brandon Sanderson confirmed that it will be a while before the next half of the series begins. In the author’s State of the Sanderson blog post for 2024, he told fans to “savor” the newest addition to the fantasy series, as he’s “ready for a break” from it. Although Sanderson is penning a novella centered on Rock in the semi-near future, his primary focus for the next few years will be writing Mistborn Era 3 and then his Elantris sequels.

With that in mind, it could easily be a decade or longer before he returns to The Stormlight Archive. Even with Wind and Truth‘s satisfying ending, that’s going to be a lengthy and agonizing wait for those eager to return to this world. But despite Sanderson’s latest Stormlight Archive update being a bit disappointing, it could benefit the second arc in the long run. It wouldn’t be the first time a long wait has increased the excitement for a series’ return, and at least Sanderson is being transparent about it.

Sanderson taking a break from The Stormlight Archive may actually work in the series’ favor, ramping up the anticipation for arc 2 over time. Readers aren’t expecting new additions to the series soon, so it’s not like the wait will be marked by frustration and disappointment. And the author is giving readers plenty of other stories to look forward to in the interim — stories that are part of Sanderson’s Cosmere and likely to tie into The Stormlight Archive‘s second half.

The time away could be good for readers, as it will give them the chance to miss The Stormlight Archive before its return.

The time away could be good for readers, as it will give them the chance to miss The Stormlight Archive before its return. Just as TV and movie reunions are more exciting when they’re years removed from the original conclusion, The Stormlight Archive‘s second arc will feel even sweeter after time away. The next Stormlight Archive book will also feel like an event after such a lengthy break, and that could make arc 2 bigger than the first one.

As anticipation rises for The Stormlight Archive arc 2, the next installment will receive more and more attention. As a result, the second arc’s debut will likely be a massive event — one that’s even bigger than Wind and Truth‘s 2024 release. That means the next five installments will be even bigger than the first arc, since the early Stormlight Archive books weren’t as established or as heavily anticipated.

Brandon Sanderson’s Next Stormlight Archive Project Will Ease The Agonizing Wait For Arc 2

The Stormlight Archive book 6 is years away from hitting shelves, but this one exciting Brandon Sanderson project will ease the long wait.

Additionally, Sanderson needs to find a way to top what he’s done already. This won’t be an easy feat, but the scope of the author’s work suggests he’s up to the challenge. It helps that Sanderson has clearly planned The Stormlight Archive as a 10-book series, so he probably has a good idea of how the second arc will build on the first one already.
