Cailee Spaeny’s New Netflix Show Can Redeem Her Divisive Drama From 2 Years Ago

Summary

  • Cailee Spaeny has joined Netflix’s Beef season 2, which could potentially redeem her previous TV show’s reception.
  • Beef season 2 will feature Spaeny alongside Charles Melton.
  • After a mixed reception for The First Lady, Beef season 2 offers Spaeny a chance to shine on TV once again.

Cailee Spaeny has been cast in a key role in Beef season 2 on Netflix, and it can make up for the mixed response to a different TV series she starred in. Lee Sung Jin initially conceived Beef as a limited series that wasn’t supposed to have any follow-up seasons. But when it became one of Netflix’s most popular shows, the streamer decided to rework it into an anthology series, with each season focusing on a different feud between different characters.

Spaeny’s Beef season 2 casting was announced by TVLine, alongside May December’s Charles Melton. They’ll fill the feuding roles played by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in season 1. Spaeny is one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood right now – and one of the best young actors working today – so it’s no wonder Netflix has cast her to star in Beef season 2. And if Beef’s second season can live up to its first, then it’ll redeem the mixed reception met by the last Spaeny-starring TV show.

Cailee Spaeny’s Beef Season 2 Casting Can Redeem The First Lady’s Mixed Reception

The First Lady scored just 41% on Rotten Tomatoes

Spaeny’s last TV show was The First Lady, which aired for one season on Showtime in 2022. The First Lady chronicled the experiences of three First Ladies of the United States: Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Michelle Obama. Spaeny had a recurring role as Roosevelt’s daughter, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. While the performances were praised, the series was criticized for its pacing and shallow characterization, and earned a “rotten” score of just 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Beef season 1 was a massive hit with a huge global fan base and plenty of Emmy wins, so season 2 gives Spaeny the opportunity for another critical success on TV. The First Lady was her first negative score for a TV show on Rotten Tomatoes; her previous TV projects, Mare of Easttown and Devs, both received positive reviews. If Beef season 2 can live up to Beef season 1, then it’ll give Spaeny a chance to make up for the mixed response to The First Lady.

Beef Season 2 Can Continue Cailee Spaeny’s Recent Rotten Tomatoes Hot Streak

Since Priscilla, all of Spaney’s projects have been critically acclaimed

After the slight misstep of The First Lady, Spaeny gave a star-making performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s critically acclaimed biopic Priscilla. The success of Priscilla kicked off an impressive winning streak for the actor. Every project that Spaeny has taken on since Priscilla has been similarly lauded by critics: Priscilla scored 84% on RT; Civil War scored 81%; and the recent Alien: Romulus also scored 81%. Beef season 2 can continue that hot streak of critical acclaim.
