David Tennant Addresses His Return Status In Hulu Series With 95% RT Score Following Season 1’s Cliffhanger Ending

Rivals star David Tennant addresses his potential return, following that season 1 cliffhanger ending. An adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s novel, Rivals explores the ongoing quarreling between powerful and affluent English men, Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony, Lord Baddingham (portrayed by Tennant). Along with Tennant, the Rivals cast includes Alex Hassell, Danny Dyer, Nafessa Williams, Oliver Chris, Bella Maclean, Aidan Turner, and more. In the season 1 finale, when an argument quickly escalates between Tony and Cameron Cook, he is knocked unconscious, leaving his status for Rivals season 2 unknown.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Tennant addressed whether he will return for Rivals season 2 and what that may look like. As he explained, that final moment would make for a “weird” conclusion but teased how season 2 could feature Tony’s funeral. Tennant also revealed that production will begin following the 2025 Baftas. Read his comments below:

I mean, it would be quite a weird way to end, wouldn’t it? Maybe you could start season two with the funeral? But we start shooting the day after the Baftas. I don’t know what that means for me on that first morning.

What This Means For Rivals Season 2

Tony Will Be Back In Some Capacity

Following a successful debut on Hulu and Dinsey+, Rivals season 2 was announced in December. Because of how integral Tony is, it may be hard for the show to continue in his absence, but Tennant’s comments about the Rivals season 1 finale suggest that he will be back. During episode 8, Tony confronts Cameron, knowing about her and Rupert being together, and implores her to stay away. When Tony threatens her, making a departure from Corinium seem nearly impossible, their argument turns dangerously physical. That is when Cameron strikes Tony in the head.

This new Disney drama series starring David Tennant is something to watch while waiting for the confirmation of the third season of Feud.

While Tennant seems to indicate that Tony will be in Rivals season 2, what happens after that season 1 cliffhanger remains unclear. As Tony bleeds out, his broadcast discussion, opposite Venturer, plays on TV. Now, beyond his increasing animosity towards Cameron, the fallout from that event will also shape Tony moving forward, making his demise appear more unlikely. However, if Tony does eventually succumb to his wounds, the latest comments by Tennant imply that he may still show up in season 2, in some capacity.

Our Take On Tony In Rivals Season 2

His Return Would Be Important For The Series

There are several remaining questions concerning Tony’s storyline, which make his return for Rivals season 2 all the more important. The support of Venturer not only leads to major competition for Corinium, but also heightens the overall conflict between Tony and Rupert, should the former survive. The apparent tension between Tony and Monica Baddingham, and her warning about taking their children, is another anticipated development. Then, because Rupert and Taggie O’Hara remain close, what steps Cameron decides to take in her and Rupert’s relationship, and how she responds to the Tony incident, remain to be seen.
