Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 9 Ending Explained – Why Dexter Lets THAT Villain Escape

The ending of Dexter: Original Sin episode 9, “Blood Drive”, features Dexter surprisingly letting Aaron Spencer go after he has already been wrapped on his infamous kill table. Following the confirmation that Aaron Spencer was, in fact, a kidnapper and child killer in Dexter: Original Sin episode 8, Dexter sets his sights on bringing the Miami Metro Homicide Captain to his own form of justice. Spencer, played by Patrick Dempsey, appears to have fooled everyone at Miami Metro with his “angry father in pain” act, which almost killed Harry’s longtime partner, Bobby Watt. Dexter, however, sees straight through Spencer’s facade.

With only one episode left of Dexter: Orginal Sin season 1, Dexter will have to figure out what to do with Spencer, which could require enlisting the help of his father, Harry. Although Harry didn’t believe Dexter’s initial claims that Spencer had a Dark Passenger of his own, Harry may be more receptive after discovering that Spencer’s outburst at the cartel house nearly cost Bobby his life. Meanwhile, Harry is also juggling the reemergence of Brian Moser, Dexter’s biological brother, who makes vengeful moves to get Dexter’s attention. At first glance in Dexter season 1’s penultimate episode, it appears that Dexter accidentally cut the shrink wrap that held Spencer on the table. This “rookie mistake” leads Spencer to free himself from the table after Dexter uncharacteristically leaves the kill room, something he had never done in the original series unless it was due to forces out of his control. Spencer grabs his severed finger and the photographs of his two known victims, Jimmy Powell and his son, Nicky Spencer. Nicky is still alive, however, which is exactly why Dexter set a trap for Spencer to fall into.

The final scene of Dexter: Original Sin episode 9 suggests that Dexter had been waiting for Spencer to escape so that he could follow him to Nicky’s location. When Spencer sees the note for “Nicky’s Father” on his door towards the end of Dexter: Original Sin episode 9, he yells, “F*****g Victor!” and grabs his gun. Victor has yet to be introduced or identified in Dexter: Original Sin, which raises an enormous curiosity about who he is and why Spencer thinks he is blackmailing him.

Now that he’s seen Dexter’s Dark Passenger, he could try to expose Dexter but that would only raise suspicions about him as well. Spencer is likely going to his hideout where he’s keeping Nicky or wherever Victor lives. He could also rush himself to the hospital or visit his longtime friend, Harry Morgan, in the Dexter: Original Sin season 1 finale.
