Donald Glover Wants To Bring The Fun Back To Star Wars With His Lando Movie

Lando Calrissian actor Donald Glover spoke about his plans for the Star Wars movie Lando in a recent interview, indicating what he hopes the movie will bring to Star Wars movies and TV shows. Lando is one of several upcoming Star Wars movies, and, like many of these new projects, updates on Lando have been a bit sparse. However, the movie is likely to feature Glover as Lando Calrissian yet again, following his debut as the younger version of the character in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Glover and his brother, Stephen Glover, will also co-write the movie.

In an interview posted by WSJ. Style on YouTube, Donald Glover shared his plans for Lando, specifically indicating that he wants the project to bring some newfound fun to Star Wars. In particular, Glover stated, “I just want it to be fun, like, as a Star Wars fan myself, like, I think it’s important that there just needs to be more fun being had. It’s very hard to have fun right now.”

While it seems Glover was speaking more broadly about the current state of the world, it’s also true when looking at Star Wars in particular; Star Wars is meant to be a joyful, fun-filled franchise, yet, in recent years, the franchise has experienced profound negativity.

Donald Glover Is Absolutely Right… Star Wars Should Be Fun

Glover’s comments about how difficult it is to have fun right now likely referred to a larger societal context; however, it rings true in the Star Wars franchise in particular as well. As The Acolyte’s cancelation made clear, there is a considerable amount of divisiveness in the fanbase. In fact, since Disney acquired the rights to Star Wars, the fandom has been split, with many refusing to accept the Disney additions to the franchise as canon. Added complaints unfortunately have included Star Wars becoming more diverse, which has led to racist attacks on the movies and shows’ actors.

In addition to this behavior clearly having negative effects on the actors, writers, creators, and fans, the vitriol and negativity have certainly made Star Wars feel less ‘fun.’ In fact, the knowledge that new installments of Star Wars shows and movies will no doubt lead to a brand-new wave of backlash and criticism only worsens tensions in the franchise. Hopefully, Donald Glover’s plans for Lando will truly represent a change in this pattern.

Lando is a very beloved character in Star Wars, and his link to the original trilogy may make even the biggest critics in the fanbase more open to the movie. Of course, such an update to an original trilogy character could have the exact opposite effect, as much of the negativity in the fanbase seems to be linked to nostalgia. Nevertheless, Donald Glover’s comments about Lando inspire hope that this upcoming Star Wars movie will shift the tone in the fanbase.
