The problem with the 2019 version of The Lion King was that the cartoonish expressions of Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa were part of the movie’s charm, and their absence felt wrong.

This origin story meant Moana 2 had more in common with lackluster Disney sequels like The Return of Jafar, which was five episodes of a planned Aladdin TV show all stuck together, than it did truly compelling animated films like Toy Story 2.

However, what Moana 2 lacked in narrative cohesion, it more than made up for with stunning visuals and some enjoyable musical numbers. Frozen II (2019)
