With Final Fantasy 9 celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025, it could be that Square Enix finally plans to unveil the long-rumored remake. Following the rampant success of the Final Fantasy 7 remake and its sequel Rebirth, fans of the wider franchise were quick to request that some of the less mainstream, but still popular, titles receive a similar treatment. While many would appreciate a full-scale reimagining of the divisive Final Fantasy 8, the ninth mainline entry is undoubtedly the next most-requested remake.

Square Enix fueled rumors regarding a possible announcement regarding a Final Fantasy 9 remake by launching a website dedicated to celebrating the game’s 25th anniversary. At the time of writing, the website simply contains information on the game’s merchandise, including new products made for the upcoming event, but there’s no word on a new game. This hasn’t stopped the community from speculating that a remake project could be unveiled in the coming months given how much effort is going into celebrating Final Fantasy 9‘s 25th anniversary.

If There Was Ever A Time For An FF9 Remake, It Would Be Now

Why Not Reveal It Alongside A New Console

Various Final Fantasy developers, including Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida, have discussed the possibility of remaking Final Fantasy 9 but Square Enix has kept its cards close to its chest. A popular theory amongst the fan base is that the announcement of such a game could come alongside Nintendo’s planned Direct dedicated to the Switch 2. Nintendo and Square Enix have a close partnership with the latter often revealing new games through Direct’s rather than its own channels.

This remains pure speculation until such time as Square Enix actually confirms plans for Final Fantasy 9 remake, but it’s not difficult to see it unveiled during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. The digital event is expected to not only show off the Switch 2’s hardware but will also shed light on some of the games planned to launch with the console. Given the publishers’ history and the overall popularity of Final Fantasy 9, it’s easy to see how such a partnership could happen.

A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Is Long Overdue

It Might Be The Best Game In The Series

I’ve played through nearly every Final Fantasy game and I’ll happily go out to bat for Final Fantasy 9 being the best of the series. It’s story may be largely uncomplicated but it tells it well, populating it plenty of iconic characters and deep moments that tug on the heartstrings; I’ll never forget Vivi ruminating on the nature of death and what it means to be alive. I hope we do finally see an announcement regarding a remake so new generations have a chance to experience FF9 with a fresh coat of paint.
