Following Frozen Empire, Ghostbusters Is Ready to Explore the World of… Pirates?!

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest #1!The Ghostbusters have been busting ghosts of all sorts in the streets of New York City since the ‘80s, and even had a recent resurgence in the form of two legacy films: Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. And now, the Ghostbusters are going on another all-new adventure, and this time, they’re not just hunting any old ghost, they’re getting ready to explore the world of pirates.

In a press release from Dark Horse Comics, it was announced that the publisher is launching an all-new four-part limited series: Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest by David M. Booher, Aviv Or, Cris Peter, and Jimmy Betancourt. The first issue of the series will feature main and variant cover artwork by artists Tyler Crook and Max Sarin, respectively, which can be viewed below, along with the official synopsis for Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest.

The Ghostbusters’ increasing notoriety is throwing them for a loop. While Trevor steadies himself by trying to plan a “friendiversary” celebration for him and Lucky, Phoebe meets someone who might be a real friend instead of just a social media follower. But friendships new and old have to take a back seat to more immediate concerns when a ghostly saber summons the ghost of Captain Kidd and threatens to transform NYC into a ghostly pirate town!

In the press release, the writer for Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest, David M. Booher, spoke on the inspiration for the series. In their statement, Booher dropped the fun-fact that the main antagonist for this comic, Captain Kidd, was actually a real-life pirate who lived in New York City.

David M. Booher: “When I researched ghostly happenings in New York City, I came across the true story of Captain Kidd. He owned a house near Wall Street with his family. Turns out, historians are divided on whether he was the fearsome pirate we know or actually framed for piracy. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring him back to ask him ourselves.”

Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest #1 (of 4) by Dark Horse Comics is available May 21, 2025.

Dark Horse’s New Ghostbusters Comic Will Fill In the Gap Between the Two Latest Films

Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest is Set Between Afterlife & Frozen Empire

Even though Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest is a comic book, and thus opens itself up to the possibility of either using the original Ghostbusters cast or creating a brand new one unique to a separate continuity, this series will feature the same Ghostbusters from the newer films. The likes of Phoebe, Trevor, Gary, and Callie will be facing-off against the ghost of Captain Kidd, and will be saving Manhattan from becoming a 17th century ghost pirate den.

So, if the current Ghostbusters are starring in this all-new story, where does Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest fall on the timeline? Well, it will actually take place between the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, effectively bridging the gap between the two films. Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest will also be a direct sequel to Dark Horse’s previous Ghostbusters comic: Ghostbusters: Back in Town.
