General Sorrengail’s Most Controversial Fourth Wing Decision May Confirm 1 Dark Theory In Onyx Storm

Summary

  • General Sorrengail’s controversial decision to force Violet to become a dragon rider in Fourth Wing has dark, hidden motives.
  • Lilith suspects her husband’s death was connected to Navarre military secrets, leading to her drastic actions with Violet.
  • Onyx Storm will unravel more mysteries about Violet’s family, her second signet, and the corruption of Xaden in a world of magic.

Onyx Storm will continue Violet Sorrengail’s story after Iron Flame‘s surprising ending, and it may confirm a deeper reason for General Sorrengail’s most controversial Fourth Wing decision. Violet’s mother sacrifices her life at the end of the second Empyrean Series book, but Onyx Storm still must address unanswered questions about her and Violet’s father. Lilith Sorrengail has a shaky relationship with Violet in Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, and she’s responsible for Violet joining the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College despite her training to become a scribe.

General Sorrengail forcing Violet to become a dragon rider is a controversial choice in Fourth Wing, and the other characters criticize her for it. However, Iron Flame offers an explanation for Violet’s mother’s actions. The sudden change of plans stems from Lilith’s knowledge of the venin, Navarre’s leadership, and her daughter. Lilith suspects that Violet will learn the truth in the Scribe Quadrant, and that’s why she sends her elsewhere. She knows Violet won’t agree with how Navarre is handling the situation, which could put her in danger. And this may confirm the theory that Lilith has experienced this before.

The higher-ups in Navarre’s military know the truth about venin and wyvern in Fourth Wing, and they’ll go to great lengths to keep this secret under wraps. General Sorrengail clearly knows this, and she tells Violet as much in Iron Flame. Many Fourth Wing theories about Violet’s father lead back to this, suggesting that he was killed by Navarre’s leaders for knowing too much. If this is the case, Lilith may suspect foul play. This would add another layer to her insistence that Violet join the Riders Quadrant, as she’d want to avoid Violet meeting the same fate as her father.

Since Violet’s father is also a scribe, Lilith’s reluctance to let Violet become one supports this dark Fourth Wing theory. Although Lilith doesn’t mention Violet’s dad in her admission in Iron Flame, it seems obvious she’s afraid of the people she works for. And given the recency of her husband’s death, it makes sense she’d choose a different path for Violet. As Reddit notes, the fact that she keeps it under wraps and doesn’t train Violet makes it seem like she’s tip-toeing around the other military officials. Perhaps General Sorrengail knows from experience how dangerous they truly are.

With Lilith telling Violet the truth in Iron Flame — and sacrificing her own life for her children — the door is open for Onyx Storm to dig deeper into her backstory. In doing so, the next Empyrean Series book can finally confirm the theory that Violet’s father was killed for his knowledge. It’s possible he even planned to come clean about Navarre’s secrets, explaining Lilith’s fear that Violet would do the same. Knowing that Lilith knew the truth and was trying to protect her, Violet could start looking more critically at her parents’ history. This is how Onyx Storm can dredge up his father’s death and further redeem General Sorrengail.
