Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s Dana Reference Makes Sigourney Weaver’s Absence So Much Worse

Summary

  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Easter egg referencing Dana Barrett upset fans due to Sigourney Weaver’s absence.
  • Dana’s importance in the original Ghostbusters films was significant, yet she has not returned in a major way.
  • Despite teaser scenes in Afterlife, Dana’s absence in Frozen Empire left a major plot hole unexplained.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire contains a hidden reference to Dana Barrett, but this Easter egg makes Sigourney Weaver’s absence so much worse. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife series has seen the return of many classic characters from the original Ghosbusters, with the cast of Ghosbusters: Frozen Empire bringing back even more characters like Walter Peck and Slimer. However, Sigourney Weaver’s Dana has still yet to return in a major way despite her importance to the original film, which is why this Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Easter egg rubbed so many fans the wrong way.

Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett is one of the most important characters in the Ghostbusters franchise, with her playing a key role in the original film. In 1984’s Ghostbusters, Dana hires Peter Venkman to take care of a haunting in her apartment, with this series of events leading to her becoming possessed by the shapeshifting demon dog Zuul. Dana returned again in Ghostbusters II, but since then, her role in the franchise has been minimal.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s Dana Easter Egg Hurts Sigourney Weaver’s Absence

The Movie Acknowledges Her Existence But Still Ignores Her

It was highly expected that Sigourney Weaver’s Dana would play a big role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, as this was set up by Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Ghostbusters: Afterlife features a post-credits scene in which Peter returns to New York City and sees Sigourney Weaver’s Dana, who is revealed to be his wife. This teased that Dana would play a big role in the sequel, but she wasn’t in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire at all.

Sigourney Weaver even appeared in

(2016).

It was a real disappointment that Dana wasn’t in the sequel, and it turns out that Sigourney Weaver wasn’t even asked back for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. This is made even worse by the fact that a poster can be seen in front of the library advertising one of Dana’s concerts. This means that Dana was thought about while making Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, but they still didn’t want her in the film.

How Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Failed Sigourney Weaver’s Dana

She Deserved A Big Role

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire failed Dana in a big way, and it wouldn’t be such a big deal if it wasn’t for the film’s handling of other legacy characters. Nearly every other main Ghostbusters cast member was brought back and treated in a respectful way, which is why it was disappointing to hear nothing of Dana even after the Ghostbusters: Afterlife post-credits scene.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire makes no effort to explain why Dana isn’t there. After all, it only makes sense for her to be helping the Ghostbusters out when New York City is under attack. The absence of Sigourney Weaver’s character in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a huge plot hole because of this, which is why the movie should’ve utilized Dana.
