WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers For DC Vs. Vampires: World War V #1!The iconic Batman villain Hush may have just achieved his most dramatic comeback in comic history by killing Batgirl in the best-selling Elseworlds series DC vs. Vampires. If the next issue confirms Barbara Gordon’s death, it will not only plunge DC’s vampire war into complete chaos but also raise a crucial question: Who will step into Batgirl’s role? I think I might already have the answer.

Hush delivers Damian’s message, “Sic semper tyrannis,” before detonating a bomb that engulfs them both in flames.

Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt, and Pierluigi Casolino’s DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1 escalates the Elseworlds epic by transforming the already intense war between vampires and humans into a three-sided conflict involving Barbara’s vampire army, Damian’s vampire guerrilla fighters, and Earth’s remaining humans.

Alongside this heightened complexity, Rosenberg introduces new characters to the narrative, including Thomas Elliot—formerly Bruce Wayne’s childhood friend, now the villain Hush. Hush is particularly intriguing in this series, as he sides with Damian Wayne and seemingly delivers a fatal blow to the vampire queen. However, there could be a major twist surrounding this villain’s ‘return.’

Hush Just Killed Vampire Queen Batgirl in DC vs. Vampires: World War V (I Think)

Batgirl makes her sequel debut toward the end of DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1, standing on her balcony overlooking Gotham. However, her peaceful moment is abruptly interrupted when one of Damian’s guerilla fighter vampires sneaks up on her. Batgirl appears to recognize the vampire as Hush, but despite the bandages covering his face—Hush’s signature look—I’m not entirely convinced it’s him, as Damian’s other vampires are also shown with face bandages earlier in the issue. Regardless of his true identity, though, I believe this vampire may have successfully killed Batgirl.

Despite calling for her guards, Batgirl is left to defend herself as Damian’s widescale attack on her headquarters unfolds. She tackles ‘Hush,’ only to discover this was his plan all along. He delivers Damian’s message, “Sic semper tyrannis,” before detonating a bomb that engulfs them both in flames. Batgirl is shown burning alive before plummeting hundreds of stories. While the comic ends without confirming her death, the artwork strongly suggests it. This raises the critical question of who will take over as the vampire ruler if Batgirl is dead or too injured to continue ruling.

‘Sic semper tyrannis’ is a Latin phrase that typically means tyrannical leaders will eventually be overthrown.

Wonder Woman Would Most Likely Become the Next Vampire Queen If Batgirl Dies

DC vs Vampires World War V 2 Main Cover Solicits: Vampire Wonder Woman puts a sword to Alfred's neck.

Thanks to future solicitations, fans know there’s still a vampire queen in the series, though Barbara’s name isn’t specifically mentioned. This leaves room for the possibility that another female character has taken on the role. If that’s the case, I’m convinced it will be Wonder Woman. As one of the most powerful vampires in the series, she’s served under both Dick and Barbara during their reigns. The theory is further supported by Wonder Woman’s prominent presence in both main and variant cover art, suggesting a major role. While I was excited to see Batgirl continue as DC’s vampire queen, I wouldn’t mind if Wonder Woman steps into the role instead.
