Summary

  • Glen Powell finds it delightful that people are taking the missing kiss in
    Twisters
    seriously.
  • Powell’s character and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ were supposed to kiss in the movie, but it was cut.
  • The decision to remove the kiss was met with outcry from viewers, which Powell believes is a sign that people care about the movie.

Glen Powell reacts to the surprising outcry over Twisters not featuring a kiss between the two leads. Released in mid-July, the sequel to 1996’s Twister stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a hotshot storm chaser who teams up with Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) to tame a tornado. The dynamic between Tyler and Kate is a key part of the movie, but despite the clear romantic tension between the two, they never kiss onscreen. It was later revealed that director Lee Isaac Chung opted to remove a kissing scene from the final film.

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote his Audible Original podcast, The Best Man’s Ghostwriter (out September 12), Powell shares his reaction to the backlash surrounding Twisters‘ missing kiss. Many viewers have lamented the scene’s removal, and Powell finds it delightful that so many people are taking it seriously. He says:

I’m taking it very personally! I’m sure you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes, where I did get to kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones, which really is all that counts. [Laughs] We had a great time, and I’m really proud of the movie.

I really think that even that [backlash] shows that people care, which is really great. I just love how excited people have gotten about that movie, and Daisy and I send each other the TikToks and the gifs. There’s so much funny stuff coming out of it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. It creates this conversation and cultural moment, and people dress up and do the thing. It’s been really awesome.

So, kiss or no kiss,
everybody’s a winner.

There Are Pros And Cons To Twisters’ Missing Kiss

Director Lee Isaac Chung Had Valid Reasons For Cutting It

Standing at $313.9 million worldwide, Twisters has become a genuine box office hit that has withstood intense competition. It also garnered positive reviews, making it a sequel that arguably rivals its predecessor. One of the strongest parts of the movie is the relationship between Tyler and Kate, which serves to deepen both of their characters while also fueling a portion of the plot. Because of this, the pairing has become very popular online, thus spurring an outcry over the fact that they do not kiss onscreen.

Led by the perfect chemistry between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, Twisters provides ample thrills, solid characters, and great technical work.

Chung explained the decision to cut Twisters‘ kiss, which came down to several reasons. From shifting audience tastes to not wanting to diminish Kate’s overall arc, Chung’s reasoning is well-thought-out, and easy to comprehend. Beyond that, one could say the bond between Kate and Tyler is strong enough to not require any overt romantic gestures. By the time the Twisters ending rolls around, the two have survived a number of tornadoes and opened up to each other. They already have a compelling dynamic that is easy to get invested in.

At the same time, those wishing the kiss had made it into Twisters‘ final cut are equally valid. All too frequently, action movies throw their leads into lackluster romantic relationships, but the romance between Kate and Tyler feels genuine and earned. It only made the disaster movie a more well-rounded story, and a final kiss would’ve added to the overall sense of triumph that comes from the end. Though there have been some discussions about its potential, a Twisters sequel isn’t currently in the works, meaning Kate and Tyler so far remain where viewers left them: running after another storm.
