Independence Day 3 Chances & Will Smith Return Get Honest Response From Franchise Director

Independence Day franchise director Roland Emmerich addresses the chances of Independence Day 3 with Will Smith happening. Released in 1996, Emmerich’s sci-fi disaster flick was a major hit, following Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller and other key figures as they spearhead Earth’s defense following an alien invasion. Emmerich would return to directing the poorly-received Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016, which kills off Hiller after Smith reportedly dropped out only weeks before filming.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, Emmerich is asked about whether he could reunite with Smith for Independence Day 3. The director casts doubt on the idea given Smith’s character’s death and the franchise’s current rights situation. Check out Emmerich’s comment below:

“Well, yeah. I’ve been like, ‘[Will’s character] died in number two. But also, Disney now has the decision to make it, which is even worse, you know, because they never ever did my deal.”

More to come…
