It Hurts to Admit, But Storm Has Outgrown the X-Men Whether Marvel Likes It or Not

Warning: contains spoilers for Storm #5The Eternal Storm has finally debuted, as the iconic Ororo Munroe of X-Men fame evolves beyond her Earthly realm, becoming one with Eternity as she prepares to do battle against Oblivion. Across the millennia, Eternity and Oblivion have battled throughout the cosmos, and Storm is the latest avatar of Eternity to go up against The Void… marking Ororo’s elevation past mortality into a true cosmic being.

After her tragic death in Storm #4, the abstract entity Eternity has chosen Ororo as its newest avatar, granting the fan-favorite mutant vast new powers that extend her leagues past her already considerable Omega-level abilities.

Storm #5, from writer Murewa Adoyele with art by Lucas Werneck, is an absolutely gorgeous comic that details the eternal war between Oblivion, who wants the cosmos to return to nothingness, and Eternity, who wants the cosmos to be ever expanding, with Storm now caught right in the middle of the entities latest epic battle as the newly resurrected Eternal Storm.

Eternity in Overspace in Marvel Comics

Storm has not been a true part of the X-Men for years, first separating from them during the Krakoan Age when she became Regent of Sol, and later the leader of the Great Ring on Arakko. Since the fall of Krakoa, Storm has joined the Avengers and acted as her own independent hero, further proving how distant she now is from the X-Men. Ororo’s latest battle will see her face off against the abstract universal entity known as Oblivion, pushing the mutant hero way beyond the mortal coil. Just like the iconic Jean Grey accepting her role as the cosmic Phoenix, Storm’s latest evolution begs the question: Can Ororo ever truly be a member of a regular X-Men team again?

“Then existence would be better without you in it. I move for Eternity’s end… the collapse of the universe.”

Storm will always support mutantkind, and fight alongside the X-Men when needed, but she is now on such a high level of cosmic importance, that even her placement on the Avengers seems too small for her. Over the centuries Oblivion and Eternity have battled, with Eternity using an avatar to fight its battles, and their latest fight is for the future of the entire universe. If Oblivion defeats the Eternal Storm, the Marvel Universe will be erased alongside Eternity, allowing Oblivion to once again rule over the Void. Storm has fought world-ending entities before, like the Phoenix Force, the Adversary, and the Shadow King, but she has never before faced a being that sits so close to the seat of The-One-Above-All.

Storm #5 Oblivion defeating Eternity

Unfortunately for Storm, not a single one of Eternity’s avatars have ever defeated Oblivion, who fights in the duels himself. In fact, most of Oblivion’s opponents are killed almost immediately, a terrifying foreshadowing of Ororo’s fate. The iconic hero has already died once in Storm, revived by Eternity, and if she does not learn how to use her new Eternal Storm abilities successfully, she may be the next to perish at Oblivion’s hands.
