I’m concerned by Married at First Sight season 18’s Emem Obot‘s eagerness and desperation to be a wife amid her fast engagement after her divorce from Ikechi Ojoré. In the beginning of the experiment, I thought Emem showed all the signs of being ready for marriage, but as the season evolved, and she got called out for her fervor to be in a marriage, I realized she was being problematic. Married at First Sight season 18 is currently airing its reunion episodes, with the “Where Are They Now?” episode set to air afterward.
Emem and Ikechi had a turbulent run on the show, in a season that was unprecedented. Emem and Ikechi seemed like they were headed in a positive direction on their honeymoon, but all that changed upon their return to Chicago and moving in together. Ikechi harshly disliked Emem’s communication style and directness, and I watched him often called her out of her name as a result of his frustration. They had heated exchanges before ultimately deciding to end their marriage. “I wish you nothing but the worst,” were Emem’s final sentiments to Ikechi.
Emem Moved On From Ikechi Too Fast
Before The Ink Was Dry
What shocked me most about Emem, was her concerning decision to move on and start dating within a week of ending the marriage with Ikechi officially. She went on a date with an elementary school acquaintance, Brandon Williams, and the pair instantly reconnected. Brandon, who was also not officially divorced from his wife of ten years, with whom he has two children, came on to Emem strong, and she was responsive. By their second date, which Emem’s cast mates, Karla Juarez and Camille Parsons, saw the beginning of, Brandon and Emem were clear on wanting to move forward seriously.
I thought Emem moved way too fast, and didn’t give herself enough time to absorb the situation that happened to her and learn her part in it. To me, Emem was irresponsible in pursuing a serious relationship so soon. What’s more, Emem and Brandon got engaged within a week or two of their reconnection, which I find wholly unrealistic.

Emem Is Coming Across As Desperate
She’s Overly Eager To Be A Wife
I am not the only one believing that Emem’s jump into a new engagement with Brandon was problematic; other Married at First Sight fans felt the same way. In a reunion clip provided by @mafsfan, Emem will be prompted by Brandon to get married by expert, Pastor Cal Roberson, right then and there. Seeing this, I had the same thought as a well-liked comment by another fan.
“I usually like her but seeing her this past episode I’m like no it’s giving desperate.”
I watched Emem throw all caution to the wind in her desire to be a wife.
I think a rational person would have given the new connection with Brandon time, as he has presented his own red flags in his circumstances.
It’s one thing to be enamored with someone upon vibing very well, but it’s another to jump into something so serious without fully understanding the other person. I feel Emem is being reckless, and it is very telling of her controversial personality in terms of being overly eager to be a wife, no matter who it’s with.
I Agree That Emem Wanted A “Plug & Play” Husband
Ikechi Was Right
Upon hearing of Emem’s quick engagement, Ikechi asserted his notion all along that Emem wanted a “Plug and play husband,” and it didn’t matter who it was. Emem went from being all in on Ikechi to all in on Brandon, which also leads me to believe that her whole motivation was to be a wife, to anyone who showed interest. Married at First Sight fans also felt the same after seeing the reunion clip.
“they’re both weird😂. Ikechi was right about Em.”
I think Brandon and Emem are both overly eager to be married and abandon any healing work they need to do from their ongoing divorces. Emem is “giving desperate” to me, as she is forgoing common sense and not highlighting the smart woman she is by being overly eager to be in a marriage. More will be revealed in Married at First Sight season 18 as it officially winds down, but I’m certain Emem is not doing things the right way, and it’s causing myself and other fans to turn against her.
Married At First Sight airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
