Russell Shaw is back in Tracker season 2, as Jensen Ackles shares a new image from the show’s set. While the new hit CBS series only has one headlining character, Justin Hartley is joined by a solid Tracker ensemble that makes its storytelling more interesting. Aside from his professional team which includes Reenie and Velma, among others, Colter Shaw’s family is also an important part of Tracker, especially given its overarching narrative about the mysterious death of his dad. That prompts Ackles’ return as the older Shaw brother as the procedural moves forward to its sophomore year.
Taking it to his official Instagram account, Ackles shares a photo of himself on the set of Tracker season 2. Check out the image below:
Unfortunately, Ackles’ photo doesn’t reveal any narrative details for Tracker season 2. That being said, he shares in the caption that he is done filming for his initial return as Russell, but he adds that he is already looking forward to returning.
What To Expect From Ackles’ Russell Shaw’s Return In Tracker Season 2
The Shaw Brothers May Be Chasing UFOs In Their Next Reunion
Tracker‘s overarching storyline delves deep into his family history. For the longest time, Colter was made to believe that his older brother killed their dad. The brothers didn’t have any communication for years until Russell reached out for a case in Tracker season 1 penultimate episode. During their reunion, Colter’s brother also revealed that their mother convinced him to leave. Unfortunately, because they were also working on a case, they weren’t able to properly sit down and discuss their personal conundrum. There were doubts about Russell’s Tracker season 2 return because of Ackles’ busy schedule. Luckily, it all worked out.
To make things better, Ackles is also confirmed to appear in more than one episode. Per Tracker season 2’s SDCC panel, Russell will be in episode 2 of the upcoming year. The outing remains untitled, but Hartley teased that its story will involve UFOs. It’s unclear how the Shaw brothers will reunite, but considering their reconciliation in season 1, it would be easier to see them get together. This also allows Tracker season 2 to move the mystery of their dad’s death moving forward. At this point, it’s unlikely that the series will solve it without Russell.

Ackles may have not revealed when he will be back on the set of Tracker season 2, but there’s solace in knowing that he will eventually come back to film his next confirmed appearance in the series. Maybe when he returns, the CBS procedural can finally reunite all three Shaw kids, with Colter, Russell, and Dory. From there, they can work together to get to the bottom of their father’s death.
