Lenny Henry was born on August 29, 1958, in Dudley, United Kingdom. He was raised by his parents, Winston Jervis Henry and Winifred Louise Henry, and grew up with his brother, Paul Henry.

Career
Lenny Henry’s early years in comedy were spent performing in working men’s clubs, where he would impersonate predominantly white characters, such as the Frank Spencer character from the sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. His television debut came at age 16 when he won the talent show New Faces with impersonations of Frank Spencer, Stevie Wonder, and others.
Henry’s first manager was Robert Luff, who signed him in 1975 and gave him the opportunity to perform as a comedian in the touring stage version of The Black and White Minstrel Show, which Henry later stated he regretted and said it led to a “profound wormhole of depression.”
In 1976, Henry appeared in the sitcom The Fosters, which was Britain’s first comedy series featuring a predominantly Black cast. He also made guest appearances on various other TV shows during this time.
In 1980, Henry performed in a summer season in Blackpool with comedians Cannon and Ball, which he said was the first time his act received a proper response from an audience. Around this time, he also co-hosted the children’s show Tiswas, playing various characters.
In 1984, Henry’s first TV sketch show, The Lenny Henry Show, debuted on the BBC, featuring stand-up, sketches, and many of the characters he had developed. The show ran periodically for the next 19 years in various incarnations.
