One of the most popular and beloved Disney animated movies of the 2000s is Lilo & Stitch, and despite being a family-friendly movie, it has a hidden horror connection that most viewers probably don’t know about. In 2002, Disney released Lilo & Stitch, an animated sci-fi comedy directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Lilo & Stitch was a critical and box-office success, and it’s considered one of the highlights of the studio in its post-Disney Renaissance era. Lilo & Stitch spawned a franchise, but the first movie is still quite popular and has a loyal fanbase.
Lilo & Stitch took viewers to Hawaii to meet Lilo, an orphaned young girl living with her teenage sister, Nani, who was struggling to support their small family all by herself. Meanwhile, in space, Stitch, an extraterrestrial creature, escaped and landed in Hawaii, where Lilo adopted him believing he was an exotic dog. Lilo and Stitch quickly bonded, while Nani did her best to prove to a social worker that she could take care of Lilo and Stitch hid from his creator. Lilo & Stitch has all the elements of a family-friendly Disney movie, but also a hidden horror connection.

Lilo & Stitch’s Voice Actress Played Samara In The Ring
Lilo & Stitch & The Ring Came Out On The Same Year
Lilo & Stitch counted on a talented voice cast to bring its human and alien characters to life. Alongside Tia Carrere as Nani and Sanders himself as Stitch, Daveigh Chase voiced Lilo. At the time of the release of Lilo & Stitch, Chase was 12 years old, and she was no stranger to acting and lending her voice to animated characters. Chase made her acting debut on TV in a minor role in one episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in 1998, and the following year, she made her big screen debut in Her Married Lover, also in a minor role.
Chase played Samara Morgan in The Ring, the girl in the cursed videotape.
In 2001, Chase played Donnie’s little sister, Samantha, in Donnie Darko, a role she reprised in 2009 in the direct-to-video sequel S. Darko. In 2002, Chase voiced Lilo in Lilo & Stitch, and that same year she starred in the supernatural horror movie The Ring, a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror movie of the same name. Chase played Samara Morgan, the girl in the cursed videotape who could psychically etch images onto objects and into people’s minds. Chase didn’t play Samara again in the rest of the movies in The Ring franchise, but she appeared in them through archive footage.
As for Lilo, Chase did voice the beloved Hawaiian girl after Lilo & Stitch. As mentioned above, the movie spawned a franchise with direct-to-video sequels and spinoffs, TV shows, and more. Chase reprised her role as Lilo in the movies Stitch! The Movie and Leroy & Stitch, as well as the animated TV series Lilo & Stitch: The Series.
What Daveigh Chase Has Done Since The Ring & Lilo & Stitch
Daveigh Chase Has Continued Her Acting Career
Lilo & Stitch and The Ring were just the beginning of Chase’s acting career. In addition to the above-mentioned sequels, Chase appeared in Beethoven’s 5th, S. Darko, Little Red Wagon, and Jack Goes Home. Her most recent movie was the thriller American Romance, in 2016. On TV, Chase had the main role in the TV series Oliver Beene and Big Love, and voiced the lead character in Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures. At the time of writing, Daveigh Chase doesn’t have more projects lined up, but she’s the surprising link between one of Disney’s most beloved animated movies and one of the best horror movies of the 2000s.
