Amid a wave of San Diego Comic-Con announcements, Invincible HQ dropped a new promotional image for Invincible season 3 on its X (formerly known as Twitter) account, featuring protagonist Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) in a blue and black suit. Alongside the first-look promotional poster, which shows Mark looking ready to throw a punch at an unseen enemy, the account joked that the character’s season-three design is one that “Definitely won’t be getting scratched or covered in blood.” The reveal has prompted viewers to wonder why, exactly, Mark Grayson wears a blue suit in Invincible season 3.

Based on Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s comic book series of the same name, Invincible centers on teenager Mark Grayson, the son of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) — the most powerful being on Earth. When Mark starts showing signs of his superhuman abilities, Omni-Man takes the fledgling hero under his wing. However, it doesn’t take long for the series to reveal Omni-Man’s dark secrets, resulting in a massive rift between the two in Invincible season 1’s ending. For Mark, Invincible season 2 only complicates things further by revealing that his other selves aren’t so righteous.

Excitingly, Invincible season 3 is finally fixing Mark’s costume problem. While the TV series’ version of Mark Grayson/Invincible may be synonymous with his light blue and yellow suit, the character’s comic book counterpart has sported several looks, including the iconic blue and black suit revealed in the promotional image. In the source material, Mark receives the suit around the same time Oliver Grayson, Mark’s future sidekick, decides to join the fray. It just so happens that Art, Invincible‘s resident super-suit tailor, designed the blue and black suit for Mark, who eagerly puts it on.

Mark’s black and blue suit is more of a change of pace than anything else. The titular hero is tired of his yellow suit, requests new looks for himself and Oliver, and Art happens to have another option available. Invincible season 3 has the opportunity to introduce more of a narrative reason for Mark to change his appearance. At the end of Invincible season 2, part 2, Mark kills the dimension-hopping Angstrom Levy. The whole arc pushes Mark to consider that he really is capable of committing terrible acts, even if he has a strong sense of justice.

What The Blue Suit Means For Mark In Invincible Season 3

The Black & Blue Suit Represents A New Chapter In Mark Grayson’s Invincible Story

Introduced in Issue No. 50 of Kirkman’s source material, the black and blue suit that Invincible wears doesn’t have any additional benefits. Instead, Mark’s new appearance indicates that the show’s titular protagonist is starting a new chapter. When Mark loses control and brutally kills Angstrom, he shows shades of being like his father, Omni-Man — as well as the genocidal warriors who make up Invincible‘s antagonistic Viltrumite Empire. After learning that every other Mark in every other dimension joined Omni-Man, the show’s central Mark Grayson is doing some real soul-searching, which is reflected by his new suit.

Will Mark Ever Wear The Yellow Suit Again In Invincible?

Mark Switches Between His Suits In The Invincible Comics

As Mark navigates his terrifying potential and how that impacts his journey to become a just superhero, it’s possible he’ll stick with the new black and blue suit for a while. The yellow suit was Mark’s first outfit, which he wore as an inexperienced hero. The Mark Grayson of Invincible season 2 and 3 is vastly different from the character introduced in the show’s first outing; for now, the yellow suit doesn’t fit. Although Invincible has made some minor comic changes, it’s likely Mark will follow in his counterpart’s footsteps and use both suits in the confirmed Invincible season 4.

The first two seasons of Invincible are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
