MaXXXine’s streaming release date has been revealed, and it will arrive just in time for Halloween. Directed by Ti West, the final movie in his critically acclaimed X trilogy premiered in July. Following the events of X, the horror sequel finds Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) in Los Angeles, chasing her dream of stardom, although past trauma and a string of grisly murders threaten her chances. Along with Goth, the cast of MaXXXine includes Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Kevin Bacon, Halsey, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Monaghan, and Giancarlo Esposito.
According to Deadline, MaXXXine will become available to stream on Max by October 18. It’s being added to the platform through a previously confirmed deal with A24, which distributed the film.
Could MaXXXine Become A Hit On Streaming?
Halloween Season May Be The Perfect Time To Release
Before the theatrical release of MaXXXine, there were a lot of expectations surrounding how the X franchise would conclude. Compared to prior installments, X and Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story, the final entry had a more impressive box office run, earning over $21 million worldwide. However, MaXXXine took a blow in terms of critical reception, bearing the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score (currently at 73%), which might have influenced some moviegoers or casual horror audiences to wait for its launch on streaming.
X
and
Pearl
hold Rotten Tomatoes scores of 94% and 93%, respectively.
MaXXXine could gain even more success on Max, once audiences gear up for the spooky season and begin seeking out new genre films. The entire X trilogy is full of creepy moments and memorable performances, but the third film features some unique elements, including Halloween-like costumes and set pieces for “The Puritan II,” a fictional movie Maxine stars in. It also contains graphic gore, along with a Night Stalker storyline and classic horror references, most notably the use of the Bates Motel and the iconic home from Psycho.
Despite its commercial success, an upcoming streaming release may help expand the audience for MaXXXine and even the two earlier films, as viewers go back to see what happened to her character or find connections between her and Pearl. Given how popular the X franchise has become, and how well-regarded Goth is in horror roles, Halloween should be an incredibly exciting time to watch or revisit MaXXXine.
