In 1991, Kyari joined NNPC as a Processing Geophysicist with Integrated Data Services Limited. In 2007, he headed the Production Sharing Contracts Management in Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD).
He was promoted to General Manager, Crude Oil Stock Management in 2014; in 2015, he became the Group General Manager of COMD.
In 2018, Kyari became the Nigerian National Representative at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Following Maikanti Baru’s retirement in 2019, Kyari was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the 19th Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC.
