Mufasa Live-Action Poster Reimagined In Classic Lion King 2D Style Art

Mufasa: The Lion King‘s live-action poster has been reimagined in the classic style of the original Lion King‘s 2D art in a stunning recreation. The upcoming Mufasa movie will serve as both a prequel and a sequel to Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King, with Rafiki (John Kani) telling Simba’s (Donald Glover) daughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter) about the origin story of the titular lion (Aaron Pierre). While the film will pull elements of the animated franchise into its story, the adventure on display will be entirely original to the live-action universe.

Now, zpartybus.x has released a fanmade poster that reimagines Mufasa: The Lion King in the style of the 2D animated original movie. The art features Mufasa front and center, alongside Scar to his right and Rafiki to his left, now sporting brown hair to denote his youth. The poster also features Zazu in the background, while Timon, Pumbaa, and Kiara are seen in the bottom corners. The post also includes the original poster for comparison, albeit the source having a snowy background instead of Pride Rock. Check out the poster below:

What The 2D Mufasa Poster Says About The Prequel Film

Would It Have Worked In The Original Animation Style?

The fanmade poster for the prequel proves it would have worked in the 2D animation style had it been created within that universe. The cast of Mufasa: The Lion King also could have remained the same, given its focus on the past necessitating different voices regardless of presentation. Because there’s very little information about his past presented throughout the original movies, the film could utilize a similar adventure as well, remixing it to fit with the timeline of the first film.

Even though the movie will feature new music, I hope this year’s Mufasa film will incorporate the best song from Disney’s Broadway musical.

However, it’s unclear if The Lion King timeline in the 2D animated version would allow for Kiara to hear about the story from Rafiki, since her youth is thoroughly explored in The Lion King 2. These elements may have been cut from a different rendition of the film, making it more focused on the past instead of the future. Although it could also be crafted to fit into the second film’s storyline without disruption, making the retelling of his tale happen after Simba’s daughter is born, but prior to the major events of the movie.

Even though Mufasa: The Lion King won’t be adopting the 2D form the franchise originated from, zpartybus.x’s poster is a strong reminder of the live-action universe’s source material. It also highlights just how well a hand-drawn rendition of the movie could work, if Disney decided to add it to the original canon. With the movie arriving in theaters at the end of the year, it will be interesting to see how its live-action approach will differ from what could have been.
