Mythic Quest Season 5: Cancelation, New Season 4 Ending & Everything We Know

Apple TV+’s unique workplace comedy, Mythic Quest, returned for its fourth season in early 2025, but the series has been canceled before season 5. Premiering in 2020 and created by Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney, Mythic Quest follows the employees of a video game development company as they try to keep the titular MMORPG afloat while balancing their own complicated personal lives. Though workplace comedies are nothing new, Mythic Quest explores the behind-the-scenes world of video games, a relatively untapped source of humor and intrigue on TV.

Over its four seasons, the Apple TV+ original has faced a myriad of challenges that have stalled the show repeatedly. Debuting during the COVID-19 pandemic, the series eventually got on a semiregular pace before once again taking a hiatus between seasons 3 and 4. After a two-year gap, season 4 debuted in early 2025, and saw Ian (Rob McElhenny) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) fighting to roll out Elysium, their latest idea for the Mythic Quest game. Despite the development of a spinoff, Side Quest, the series has been canceled by Apple TV+.

Mythic Quest Season 5 Is Canceled

The Game Is Shutting Down After Four Seasons

Though season 4 garnered rave reviews, and the spinoff turned the series into a franchise, Apple TV+ canceled Mythic Quest before season 5. The move was somewhat surprising, and Mythic Quest has been one of the streamer’s most consistent hits since its debut. However, it’s clear that the show didn’t live up to expectations, thus earning it a cancelation instead of a renewal. Though Apple TV+ will never actually give a reason for axing the series, low viewership is almost always the culprit.

Side Quests premiered on March 26, 2025.

There are currently no plans to shop the series to other streamers, and none of Apple TV+’s originals have jumped to other homes after getting canned. However, the season 4 finale has been given a rework so that it has a sense of finality instead of being left open-ended. Few details are currently known about what sort of changes are taking place, but it is an unprecedented move for streaming TV.

Mythic Quest Season 4’s Ending Is Being Reworked

The Season 4 Ending Is Now The Series Finale

Though the cancelation of Mythic Quest was shocking, Apple TV+ is extending a courtesy never-before-seen in the history of TV. Instead of leaving things open-ended after season 4’s finale, the 10th episode of season 4 is being reworked. It’s unclear what sort of changes are going to happen, but by giving the creators a chance to amend the episode, they can offer a sense of finality that would otherwise have been absent. The changed episode will arrive in April 2025.

Rob McElhenney, Megan Ganz, and David Hornsby released the following statement:

Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.

Which Members Of The Team Could Have Returned In Season 5?

Though it’s impossible to know now that the show is canceled, it’s highly likely that the main team behind Mythic Quest would have returned for season 5 of the hilarious workplace comedy. Co-creating the show and leading the cast since day one, Rob McElhenny would likely be on hand to play the visionary (if sometimes misguided) creative genius behind the game, Ian Grimm. Meanwhile, he’d be joined by Charlotte Nicdao as Mythic Quest‘s head engineer and co-creative director, Poppy Liwang. David Hornsby’s constantly-stressed David Brittlesbee would likely have been back as the game’s executive producer as well.

The workplace comedy Mythic Quest has given fans iconic characters like Carol from HR and the testers, Rachel and Dana – here are the best ones.

Danny Pudi was expected to reprise his role as Brad Bakshi, though it’s unclear what role he’ll fill in the company in the future. Rachel (played by Ashly Burch) continued to work up the ranks in the game production world, and she might have been back on the team in season 5 too. Though she’s moved on to other projects, it was expected to see Dana Bryant back in season 5 as Imani Hakim. Jessie Ennis would probably have been back to play the slightly unhinged assistant, Jo, while Naomi Ekperigin would have been back on hand to play Mythic Quest‘s head of diversity and inclusion, Carol.

Ian’s wild new ideas could have taken the game in any direction, and season 5 would have been as unpredictable as it was hilarious.

Predicting the plot of Mythic Quest season 5 isn’t easy, especially with all the changes to the season 4 ending. The workplace comedy often relied more on situational humor than overarching plots, and season 5 would probably have been more of the same. Ian and Poppy’s professional relationship would continue to be tested, just as constant fluctuations in the world of gaming forced the team to stay on their toes. Ian’s wild new ideas could have taken the game in any direction, and season 5 would have been as unpredictable as it was hilarious.
