“New Focused, Cold Version”: House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Vengeful Aegon Teased By Star

This article contains spoilers from the House of the Dragon season 2 finale.

Summary

  • Aegon is dangerously underestimated after facing tragic events in the
    House of the Dragon
    season 2 finale.
  • Aemond and Rhaenyra are too focused on each other, leaving Aegon as an afterthought to most.
  • Aegon’s cold and focused demeanor in the finale hints at his revenge plans in season 3, setting him up as a vital player.

House of the Dragon star Tom Glynn-Carney hints at King Aegon II Targaryen’s story in season 3. Despite ascending to the Iron Throne in season 1, season 2 proved to be a cruel twist of fate for Aegon, as his young son was murdered, and Aegon was burnt beyond recognition at the hands of his brother, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar during the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Beyond Aegon’s grievous physical injuries that left him bedridden while Aemond ruled instead, the House of the Dragon season 2 finale confirmed that Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre died as well.

In an interview with The Wrap, Glynn-Carney discussed these tragic events and their traumatic effect on Aegon in season 2. In terms of Aegon’s future, heteased what to expect in season 3 after seeing Aegon leave King’s Landing with Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) in the finale. He also addressed how these events have changed Aegon’s motives and his focus as the story moves forward. Check out Glynn-Carney’s explanation below:

I think he did for a while become a shell of himself, but I think now the way we see him in Episode 8, we see him quite cold and focused. There’s a fire in his eyes that I’ve certainly not seen that’ll lead us into Season 3. This new focused, cold version of the man who wants to exact revenge.

Aegon Is Now Dangerously Underestimated

Aemond & Rhaenyra Are Too Focused On Each Other

Aegon’s fate at the Battle at Rook’s Rest has left him as an afterthought to most of his enemies and allies. Aemond became the face of the crown and of the Greens, and the one to be feared given now that he sits on the Iron Throne, in addition to controlling the world’s largest and most formidable dragon. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) is focused on how to counter Aemond, as are her fellow dragonriders and advisors, while Aemond’s own forces fear his retaliation if they fail his commands.

Helaena’s Warning To Aemond Targaryen & What It Really Means

Helaena Targaryen warns Aemnond Targaryen of a grim fate that awaits him in House of the Dragon, proving how strong her dragon dreams have become.

Other than a single visit in which Aemond taunted and threatened Aegon, even he has seemingly forgotten about his brother, confident that Aegon will never be well enough to resume ruling again. Larys is one of the few who has not forgotten Aegon and realizes that he can one day resume his mantle by waiting out the worst part of the war and returning to the conflict at the opportune moment. While Aemond, Rhaenyra, and their respective dragons and armies destroy each other, Aegon grows stronger, and awaits a triumphant return.

A great deal still needs to happen before that is viable for Aegon and for Westeros, but Larys has already put the plan in motion, and Aegon’s final season 2 scene and Glynn-Carney’s season 3 tease bode well for Aegon’s resurgence. Considering Aegon as good as dead may prove to be a mistake for Aemond, Rhaenyra, and many others, as Aegon seeks revenge against those who wronged him. Aegon is poised to still be a vital player in the game of thrones during House of the Dragon season 3.
