The Nintendo Switch already boasts a massive library of third-party releases but it’s seemingly about to grow even bigger with a title that will impress hardcore fighting game fans. Despite its reputation as a more casual system that consists of a few massive first-party releases and hundreds of smaller indie titles, the Switch also boasts one of the most competitive fight games of all time: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While this leaked game may not satisfy those who enjoy the king of the platform fighter genre, more traditional fighting game players should get a kick out of it.
Over on Reddit, user LuxerWap shared an image of a banner advertising a Nintendo Switch version of Guilty Gear Strive. The display has seemingly been erected as a part of PAX West, a massive video game convention, which officially kicks off on August 30. Whether or not an official announcement will coincide with the beginning of the event remains to be seen but it’s worth noting that the original image that was posted to social media has been deleted, suggesting some level of credibility.
Could Guilty Gear Strive Work On Switch?
It Could Appeal To The Smash Crowd
Having Guilty Gear Strive, one of 2022’s highest-rated video games with a Metacritic score of 87, on Nintendo Switch could be a great move by Arc System Works given the console’s massive install base. Many fantastic fighting games are already available on the Switch, including ArcSys’ own Dragon Ball Fighterz, a title that runs surprisingly well given the level of detail in its animation. The biggest concern for interested Switch players is whether the aging hardware is enough to effectively run a game that requires so many precise inputs on higher competitive levels.
Despite the immense amount of lore backing Guilty Gear, the number one reason to play Strive is for the competitive scene. The game’s campaign is incredibly limited given that it largely amounts to a prolonged cutscene, so those investing in the title will want to know that they’ll be able to experience multiplayer. The Nintendo Switch has often struggled with its online functionality but other versions of Strive have sported decent netcode, so one has to open the same will be true for the supposed port.
Whether or not the Nintendo Switch does gain Guilty Gear Strive, one has to wonder if the port wouldn’t be better suited for the next console generation. Nintendo has confirmed that more light will be shed on the so-called Nintendo Switch 2 before the end of the current financial year. Given the current system’s aging specs, it might be prudent for fans wanting to play Strive on the go to wait for the next Switch and hope backward-compatibility is at the top of Nintendo’s priority list.
