Onyx Storm Reveal Could Mean We’ll See A New Creature In The Next Fourth Wing Sequel

A key Onyx Storm reveal could mean that a new creature will be introduced in the next Fourth Wing sequel, adding more to the world of the series. Violet’s journey in The Empyrean Series has already been a tumultuous one as she goes from surviving the Riders Quadrant to the rebellion, with the future of Navarre growing only more and more uncertain. With the venin on the rise, the failing wards in Aretia, and Xaden’s newfound status as a venin himself, it seems like only worse things are coming in Onyx Storm.

However, the blurb for Onyx Storm from Rebecca Yarros does reveal that Violet has a plan to battle the venin back, with many theories picking apart the wording for clues about what the plotline will entail. One particular detail from the Instagram post, though, does seem certain: Violet will be venturing outside of Basgiath and Aretia, taking readers into new locations as she tries to find answers. Using that information from the Onyx Storm blurb, one new location becomes a very likely candidate for Violet’s search: the Island Nations.

Onyx Storm’s Blurb Suggests Violet Will Go To New Locations (Like The Island Nations)

The Island Nations Are Mostly Mentioned In Iron Flame

Onyx Storm’s blurb mentions that Violet will travel to find new allies, making the Island Nations a likely new location for the series. The blurb mentions that Violet will have to travel outside of Aretia to seek new allies from unfamiliar lands, which makes sense as the venin have infiltrated their ranks, according to Jack Barlowe. Though they have only been tangentially mentioned in the series so far, the Island Nations are strongly hinted to be allies of Navarre, which could lead to Violet going to appeal to them after Iron Flames’ ending.

Yarros posted the first blurb for
Onyx Storm
on September 26th, 2024.

The Island Nations’ role has been limited, as they were only mentioned explicitly a few times in Iron Flame. If they did help Navarre in the first war as hinted in Fourth Wing, Violet would likely know that as she was a scribe. She could go to the Island Nations to ask for their help as their magic and power is unknown to Navarre and could turn the tide of the war. Yarros could not only expand the story’s scope through this but also introduce a new creature to the series in Onyx Storm in the form of sea serpents.

The Fourth Wing Sequel Could Use The Island Nations To Introduce Sea Serpents

Sea Serpents Would Be A Great Equalizer For The Dragons And Gryphons In Fourth Wing

Onyx Storm could introduce sea serpents to The Empyrean Series, adding to the Island Nations’ role in the story as well as creating a great equalizer for the dragons and gryphons. The blurb for the next Fourth Wing book mentions that they need an army, power, and magic. It would not make sense for Violet to go to the Island Nations to simply request melee or naval assistance. Introducing sea serpents and their riders would add to this new location’s role as their magic could counter the venin and provide Violet with the venin cure she needs for Xaden.

Alongside this, introducing sea serpents could act as a fun complication to the dynamic between dragons and gryphons. Dragons are already powerful in The Empyrean Series, with gryphons appearing to be more limited in regard to magic and flight capability. Introducing sea serpents could change those dynamics between the two species and their riders, as the serpents could be an ancestor to dragons, making them even more powerful. Through that reveal, Onyx Storm could also expand on the series’ lore, as only two main kinds of magic have been explored so far.

Onyx Storm Introducing New Creatures Can Help Expand The Empyrean Series’ Lore

The Three Brothers’ Story Could Be Incomplete

The introduction of new creatures like sea serpents in Onyx Storm could be the perfect way to expand The Empyrean Series and its lore, especially regarding the Tale of the Three Brothers. The story of the three brothers is meant to explain the origin of dragon riders, gryphon fliers, and the venin as two of the brothers were chosen and one grew jealous, siphoning from the earth. With the introduction of sea serpents, Yarros can showcase how that legend may be incomplete, adding more to her themes of history and censorship.

Violet discovering the missing piece of the story could also add to her growing understanding of how history can be changed or erased.

The sea serpents could represent a magic source coming from water, which would complete the classic rule of three as only air and earth magic have been introduced, with rune magic seemingly unconnected to any elemental source. Violet discovering the missing piece of the story could also add to her growing understanding of how history can be changed or erased. She has already witnessed how Navarre censors the reports on the venin and buries its own history, so having this ancient myth also be changed would expand upon this theme, carrying it through Onyx Storm and beyond.
