    The Sea of Monsters
, the Gray Sisters play crucial role in the very beginning of the story, setting the stage for high-stakes adventures for the demigods.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ season 2 casting announcement has me worried — but not for the reasons you might think. At D23, Disney’s annual fan expo, Percy Jackson season 2 revealed its Gray Sisters casting, confirming that comedic powerhouses Sandra Bernhard (Roseanne), Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers), and Margaret Cho (Fire Island) will be playing the iconic trio in the Disney+ series’ sophomore outing. I’m thrilled about this casting decision, which comes on the heels of Percy Jackson‘s confirmation that Daniel Diemer’s Tyson, Percy’s (Walker Scobell) cyclops half-brother, will also join the fray.

Taking place after Percy Jackson season 1’s ending, the second season will adapt Rick Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters novel. In the source material, Percy joins forces with his fellow demigod, Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Tyson Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) in order to rescue a missing Grover — and save Camp Half-Blood by retrieving the Golden Fleece from the titular sea. All the while, Kronos is amassing power — a kind of looming threat that will no doubt bubble up again in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2.

The Trio Operate A Taxi Service In The Percy Jackson Novels

Normally, if I’m worried because of a casting announcement, it’s because the chosen actors don’t seem to align with their roles, but that’s far from the case with Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ choice for the Gray Sisters. In Rick Riordan’s books, the Gray Sisters include Anger (Deino), Tempest (Persis or Perso), and Wasp (Pemphredo) — three old women who share a single eye and, somehow, operate a taxi service. As a lover of all things Greek mythology, it’s especially fun to see Percy, who was named after Perseus, interact with characters who played a role in his namesake’s story.

Even if Bernhardt, Schaal, and Cho will bring their comedic chops to the series, the casting announcement all but confirms [a threat] is bearing down [on Percy]…

Still, given all the Percy Jackson season 2 storylines to cover, I’m worried about Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson. In the novels, the Gray Sisters provide speedy transportation to Camp Half-Blood — often because the customers hailing their cab service are in imminent peril. That said, it’s hard not to worry about Percy and his pals; even if Bernhardt, Schaal, and Cho will bring their comedic chops to the series, the casting announcement all but confirms that Kronos, or some other threat, is bearing down on the demigods right off the bat.

Why Percy Uses The Gray Sisters’ Taxi Service In Rick Riordan’s Books

The Gray Sisters Help Percy In The Opening Chapters Of The Sea Of Monsters

At the beginning of The Sea of Monsters, Percy meets his half-brother, Tyson, at school, where the duo are bullied by the Laistrygonian Giants — until Annabeth comes to the rescue. To aid their escape, Annabeth hails the Gray Sisters’ cab service by throwing Golden Drachma into the road and calling the sisters’ so-called Chariot of Damnation. All of this to say, I’m not surprised by the Gray Sisters’ casting as they play a key role in the second novel — but that doesn’t make me worry about Percy Jackson‘s heroes any less.
