The Kanto region’s Legendary Bird, Moltres, is a classic Raid Boss in Pokémon GO. First debuting in July 2017, Moltres has flown through many Gyms in 5-Star Raids. Its Combat Power is super high, so multiple Trainers and powerful Pokémon are needed to take it down. If you haven’t found one already, Moltres returns to Gyms around the world from August 3 until August 12, 2024. Take note of its weaknesses and resistances to know how to counter Moltres properly.
Aside from being a classic collector’s Pokémon in Pokémon GO, Trainers should catch a Moltres for its versatility in battle. It’s a great choice with its Legendary stats to be used during a Master League. One can also use Moltres against other 5-Star Raid Battles that require strong Flying-type and Fire-type moves. Since Moltres’s Combat Power will always be fairly high, one can guarantee that it should last a while before falling in a Raid.

Moltres Weaknesses In Pokémon GO
Type Disadvantages of Moltres
Kantonian Moltres in Pokémon GO and other games is classified as a dual Fire/Flying-type Pokémon. This means it’s weak to Electric, Water, and most importantly, Rock-type moves.
An Electric-type or Water-type move such as Thunder or Hydro Cannon will do 160% damage. However, when Moltres is hit with a Rock-type move like Rock Slide or Meteor Beam, it will deal 256% damage because of Moltres’s double weakness to Rock-type attacks. Therefore, it’s very important to find good coverage during a Moltres Raid Battle with Pokémon that can use these types of moves.
Try not to bring Pokémon that use these types of moves but can take damage from a “counter move” that Moltres might use during the Raid. For example, Golisopod can use Water-type moves. However, Golisopod’s own typing (Bug-type) is very weak when facing Moltres’s Wing Attack and Sky Attack.
Best Counters For Moltres
Rock-Wrecking Partners For Battle
The best Pokémon to choose when countering Moltres during a Pokémon GO Raid are all Rock-types. These particular Pokémon have high Attack stats and can inflict extra damage on Moltres with the right movesets. Moltres has low overall Defense, making it one of the easier Raids in August 2024. It’s not guaranteed, but if you want to do this Raid with a small number of people, you could probably finish it with three to four Trainers if they all use these Pokémon with high Combat Power.

Can Moltres Be Shiny In Pokémon GO?
A Subtle Shiny Legendary Bird
Kantonian Moltres in a Pokémon GO Raid will always appear as its regular non-shiny variant. However, once the battle has finished and the catching phase has begun, Trainers do have a small chance of encountering Shiny Moltres. This rare variant will have a distinctly pink body with the same orange and yellow flames. Fortunately, there’s a 100% catch rate for Legendary Shiny Pokémon, as long as you land a Poké Ball.
