While it might seem like Christopher and Lorelai’s short-lived marriage came out of nowhere, Gilmore Girls secretly set up this twist a few episodes earlier. The entire Gilmore Girls cast of characters is lovable, and this allowed the cult dramedy to get away with some plots that otherwise would never have worked. Seasons 6 and 7 are particularly bad offenders in this regard, subjecting some great performers to storylines that contorted familiar characters into bizarre, often unwelcome, new shapes.
The straight-talking Luke hid his daughter April from Lorelai for no real reason, while Gilmore Girls’ most hated plot saw the rebellious teen Lane slowly morph into her stern, conservative mother when she unexpectedly became pregnant. One of the most surprising and unwelcome twists from this era was the short-lived marriage of Lorelai and Christopher, which happened shortly after Lorelai and Luke’s breakup. While Logan and Rory’s Gilmore Girls season 6 story was pointless, this reunion was arguably even sillier.
Lane’s Wedding In Gilmore Girls Set Up Lorelai Marrying Chris
Christopher Is Lorelai’s Savior Just A Few Episodes Before Their Wedding
Lorelai and Christopher knew they weren’t right for each other years before Gilmore Girls even began, which was a big part of why Lorelai mostly raised Rory on her own. Despite this, the duo reunited late in season 6 and married soon after in a twist that truly strained credulity. However, a re-watch proves that Lorelai and Christopher’s marriage didn’t technically come out of nowhere, despite how unlikely the union seemed. Obviously, the pair sleep together at the end of season 6 after Lorelai’s explosive fight with Luke.
In season 6, episode 20, “Super Cool Party People,” viewers learn that Christopher was very “Knight in shining armor” when he took care of a deeply drunk Lorelai.
However, a few episodes earlier, their romantic future is quietly foreshadowed when Christopher is Lorelai’s plus-one at Lane’s wedding. This storyline leads to one of the worst Gilmore Girls episodes ever, but Lorelai’s subplot is notable for Christopher replacing Luke’s usual role in the series. Earlier in the show, Luke often appeared in places where Rory’s father, Christopher, should have been. However, in season 6, episode 20, “Super Cool Party People,” viewers learn that Christopher was very “Knight in shining armor” when he took care of a deeply drunk Lorelai.
Why Lorelai & Christopher’s Marriage Is So Controversial
The Surprise Romantic Reunion Wasn’t Popular Among Long-time Viewers
At the wedding itself, which Lorelai attended with Chris, she gives a painfully awkward speech about not getting married. Subtly, this scene suggests that Christopher could still be the husband Luke seemingly wasn’t able to be. The irony is that Christopher and Lorelai eventually break their marriage up incredibly quickly, and Luke and Lorelai do go on to get married in 2016’s Netflix revival miniseries A Year in the Life. However, before that twist changed things, there was a brief period where Christopher and Lorelai seemed destined to end up together after all.

For fans of Gilmore Girls, star Lauren Graham’s underrated followup show was a similarly fun ensemble family dramedy that lasted for six seasons.
Although this is a Gilmore Girls storyline most viewers could do without, looking back on the later episodes of season 6 proves that the marriage wasn’t pulled out of nowhere. One could even argue that the plot always had to happen one way or another, since Lorelai would otherwise never know if she and Christopher might have been able to make things work. The Gilmore Girls story was executed poorly but did have sufficient foreshadowing and narrative justification.
