Rick and Morty Made Its Secret Thanksgiving Special Tragic (But Season 8 Can Change That)

While Rick and Morty’s recent seasons accidentally made the show’s secret Thanksgiving special tragic, in retrospect, it is not too late for the show to fix this. Rick and Morty season 8 is highly anticipated for a number of reasons, but the fate of Mr. Poopybutthole ought to be somewhere on the list. Rick and Morty’s season 7 finale was the show’s highest-rated episode in years on IMDb primarily because of the eponymous pair’s adventures in the Fear Hole. However, the episode also included a brutal update on the fate of Mr. Poopybutthole, and it wasn’t good.

Rick and Morty’s First Thanksgiving Episode Was Way More Important Than You Think

Rick and Morty’s lone Thanksgiving episode marks an important point in the sci-fi comedy show’s history, although viewers might not guess this.

Since season 5, things have only gone downhill for Mr. Poopybutthole. Season 5’s finale ended with a post-credits stinger wherein he admitted that his wife left him and took his child, leaving him despondent and hopeless. The brutally funny post-credits stinger of season 6’s finale took this gag further, as a newly muscular Mr. Poopybutthole claimed he had gotten over Amy by obsessively lifting weights. When he broke his leg with a failed squat, he cried out to Amy and the truth about his sad condition became clear. Season 7’s premiere finally centered an episode on this story.

Season 7, episode 1, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back,” saw Rick reunite with Birdperson, Squanchy, Gene, and Gearhead to stage an intervention for Mr. Poopybutthole. Things soon went awry, and the group ended up outside Amy’s house, trying to win her back. This was a far cry from the events of Rick and Morty’s secret Thanksgiving special, a viral short about Poopybutthole’s love of his family. The 2017 short “The Poor in My Pants” was released on Rick and Morty’s YouTube channel in honor of Thanksgiving. It is a sweet silent short where Poopybutthole reminisces over family photos.

Later seasons of Rick and Moty made this short brutally ironic, as Poopybutthole’s life fell apart around him with little explanation.

As he looks back on his life, Mr. Poopybutthole thumbs through photos of himself and Amy meeting, dating, marrying, and having their first child. Mr. Poopybutthole ends the short looking content, reflecting on how thankful he is to have his family. Later seasons of Rick and Moty made this brutally ironic, as Poopybutthole’s life fell apart around him with little explanation and the character grew increasingly desperate to reclaim the domestic happiness he once enjoyed. Fortunately, Rick and Morty’s season 7 post-credits stinger doesn’t need to be the end of Poopybutthole’s story, despite Rick’s failure to right Poopybutthole’s path.

Rick’s attempts to get his friend’s life back on track instead ended with Mr. Poopybutthole portal-jumping to a world where he was happily married and replacing himself. In the season’s post-credits stinger, Poopybutthole admitted that he didn’t care about the consequences and simply wanted his old life back, but this new universe’s version of Amy was immediately suspicious of him. This latest misadventure is likely to end in disaster, but this doesn’t mean that Poopybutthole can’t eventually learn to change. Whether it is in Rick and Morty season 8 or not, he can still find the happiness he once had again.
