Ryan Gosling’s New Sci-Fi Alien Movie Wraps Filming With Intriguing Tease From Writer: “Gosling Is One Of The Staggering Talents Of Our Time”

Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary gets an exciting tease as it wraps filming. Project Hail Mary is an alien sci-fi movie about an astronaut (Gosling) who is tasked with saving Earth while he is alone in outer space. The sci-fi film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on a screenplay by Drew Goddard, which adapts a book by Andy Weir. In addition to Gosling, the project features a leading cast including Anatomy of a Fall‘s Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Bastian Antonio Fuentes, Isla McRae, and James Wright.

Per Variety, Project Hail Mary has wrapped filming. As the project’s shooting came to a close, screenwriter Goddard shares some intriguing thoughts on the movie. The writer says, “If you like The Martian, I suspect you’re really going to like what we’re cooking up with ‘Hail Mary.’ ” He also praises directors Lord and Miller, as well as Gosling and his stardom. Check out the full quote from Goddard below:

If you like ‘The Martian,’ I suspect you’re really going to like what we’re cooking up with ‘Hail Mary.’ Chris [Miller] and Phil [Lord] and I have known each other for decades now, and I love their work. And then obviously, Ryan Gosling is one of the staggering talents of our time.

What This Means For Project Hail Mary

The Martian Was Well-Received

Project Hail Mary is connected to The Martian in that both are based on books by novelist Andy Weir. Goddard is experienced with bringing the writer’s sci-fi novels to the screen, as he also wrote the script for The Martian for acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott. Weir’s novels can be hard to synthesize for the screen, as they often focus heavily on the science element of science fiction. The fact that Project Hail Mary is written by someone experienced with adapting Weir’s works, and who thinks the Gosling project is good for Martian fans, is a good sign.

Another reason the connection with The Martian is positive is because the former film did very well when it hit theaters. Scott’s 2015 sci-fi film ended up nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor. The movie also did well at the box office, making over $630 million worldwide on an estimated $108 million budget. Project Hail Mary is another story that will rely on its lead star to carry most of the film, making it a promising follow-up movie. Though it is unclear if it can fully replicate The Martian‘s success, it has a good foundation supporting it.

Our Take On The Project Hail Mary Status

The Film’s Release Date Is Pretty Far Out

Project Hail Mary book cover

Project Hail Mary has been in development for a while, so it is good to see significant progress being made towards the film’s release. The film adaptation was first announced in spring 2020, before the book was even released to the public. In May of that year, Lord and Miller were first hired as producers. As development has continued on Project Hail Mary, more casting and crew information has been revealed over the course of time. At one point, Amazon MGM Studios announced a release date of March 20, 2026, the same weekend as a planned Street Fighter reboot.

While he played real-life NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong in First Man, the movie was largely focused on Armstrong’s experience, much like Project Hail Mary will center its protagonist.

A March 2026 release date would be pretty far out for Project Hail Mary, considering it has just wrapped its filming. As such, it is possible that the movie could push its release date sooner than the proposed early 2026 release window. Being a film set primarily in outer space, there will likely be a lot of post-production work to come, so it is possible the movie will need the whole time between now and 2026 to finish. Being done with filming in the early days of 2025, however, sets Project Hail Mary at a great pace.

Why Ryan Gosling Is Good For Project Hail Mary

Gosling Can Take On The Film With Style

In addition to its connection with The Martian, I think Project Hail Mary‘s strongest attribute is Gosling. Due to his involvement in Barbie, which earned him an Oscar nomination and led to him giving a crowd-pleasing performance at the ceremony, Gosling is arguably an even bigger star than Damon, with widespread audience appeal. He is also experienced at playing astronauts because he was the lead in Damien Chazelle’s First Man several years ago. While he played real-life NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong in that film, the movie was largely focused on Armstrong’s experience, much like Project Hail Mary will center on its protagonist.

Gosling’s career has only heated up in recent years. Since Barbie, Gosling has also been the lead in The Fall Guy, which garnered a generally positive reception from audiences. The actor also has a couple of other upcoming projects where he is involved as a producer as well, such as The Actor and Wolf Man, which releases in theaters this month. This exhibits the momentum that his career has right now. He has the kind of charisma to be able to single-handedly carry a film, a quality that will come in handy playing the lead in Project Hail Mary.
